Những điều bạn sẽ làm

Visit a slice of paradise right outside the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Join me on a bird watching/natural history hike in the Koolau Mountain Watershed, a short 15-minute drive outside of downtown. We will explore the watershed on semi-maintained hiking trails under the rainforest canopy. With bird watching, slow and steady is the name of the game so don't worry that we will be running up any hiking trails. The hike is up and back, taking roughly 2hrs in total.

We will watch the daybreak and listen to the morning chorus of birds as we explore the valley taking in the views of downtown and Round Top Ridge. On the trail we will look/listen for birds, and I'll keep a list to share afterwards in a special certificate unique to each trip. I will give a quick binoculars tutorial at the start so you feel comfortable and ready to spot our feathered friends.

During the hike I'll discuss the natural history of how Hawaii, how the species we see got to the island, what happened to the native birds and why, and what efforts are being made to conserve them. This tour focuses mainly on the natural history of Hawaii, and is not a typical bird tour where the main aim is to check species off of a list. With all wildlife viewing there are no guarantees of what we will see, but I can guarantee a fun time! At the end of our tour we will enjoy a cup of coffee near the Hawaiian Nature Center.

I (Sera) am professional wildlife biologist, self proclaimed bird nerd and history buff. I worked in the private, government and non-profit sectors conducting bird and other wildlife surveys, before setting out to explore my passions for travel and how human history has shaped the natural landscape around us. I’ve circumnavigated the globe, hiking and bird watching along the way in places like New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Balkans, Turkey, and Europe. I co-founded Adventure Bound Bumpkins to share what I had learned about each area’s history, and how human influences have shaped their natural landscapes.

We will explore the Koolau Mountain Range and Watershed under a rich rainforest canopy. Our hike is up and back on a easier, uphill trail for a total of ~1-1.5 miles. As we hike up the hillside face will be treated to beautiful views over the adjacent valleys, streams, Round Top Ridge, and Honolulu through breaks in the forest. Forest and edge habitats provide excellent opportunities to see a variety of wildlife.

This was such a simple but perfect tour. New information, a wonderful conversation with a great host, some light hiking. We got to see way more types of birds than I had expected—some of which were rare natives to the island—and even learned about plants and history on the way. The walk itself is not very difficult, and much of the tour is spent talking (quite naturally!). If only it were longer... I’d recommend to anyone interested in interesting things.

Sera was super easy to communicate with and opened up a spot on her calendar for us last minute. Her knowledge of the area and of birds was very impressive and I really got into the whole experience of listening out for different birds and tracking them down. Thank you for the coffee too, it was a much appreciated touch!

Amazing experience, highly recommend! Sera is a great storyteller and so knowledgeable. She wove together a natural history of Hawaii along with a personalized bird tour in a beautiful valley we would never have found on our own.

Sera was a wonderful guide! She picked us up at our hotel and we went north of Honolulu. We went bird watching for several hours with Sera. She took us to a park, the parking lot was full of little feral chickens, who were adorable! We washed and scrubbed our shoes before beginning the hike to prevent the spread of pathogens. As we hiked in dusk, the sun rose around 7 am, Sera told us about the history of the Hawaiian islands. She explained different historical events and how they affect the birds that are on the Hawaiian islands today. We saw a lot of different birds. Sera is going to send me a list of the birds we saw so I can look them up later. It was a really enjoyable hike. We borrowed Sera’s binoculars, which were nice and lightweight but had good magnification. It was so cool to see the birds and learn about the plants, animals and history of Hawaii. Sera ended the tour with a cup of aero press coffee for me in a real coffee mug which was a very nice finish.

If you like nature, birds, and/or hiking, you will love this tour! Sera was our host and provided a very wonderful and personalized end to end experience. It was an easy to moderate level hike upwards through a light trafficked ridge. Sera has a vast biology background and provided lots of insight on ecological history and birds in the area. You will learn and observe so much more than hiking on your own! Thank you Sera!!

Các mẹo khác

Please be prepared to hike for roughly 2hrs with proper footwear, rain/sun gear, water and snacks. It can rain when sunny and be humid. Trails are maintained but uneven, and may have mosquitos. Theres always an element of luck with viewing wildlife, so I cannot guarantee which species we will see.

Vật dụng nên mang theo

Rain jacket/poncho. Please be aware that we will likely get rained on at some point, so plan accordingly.

Closed toe shoes or hiking boots. Trails have uneven surfaces that can be wet and muddy, with potential for trips, slips, and falls.
