"Stūrīši" is managed by the "Stūrīši-Branki" family and we have 4 households in the centre of the Livonian (Liiv) village Mazirbe. All houses neighbour each other in a beautiful landscape – the garden and the surrounding fields are for you to walk around in and enjoy. Each house has a unique history and style, varied types of rooms and amenities. Stay with us if you appreciate nature, wild sea, great local food and warm, loving hospitality from a passionate family. Our breakfasts are WOW!

Chỗ ở
"Stūrīši" is run by the "Stūrīši-Branki" family and has been our main location of inspiration as here we choose to display the items we have passionately collected over the years. This is a private museum and many people expressed a wish to stay here, so we made it possible!

You will have an absolutely unique experience to live among historical items, books and information which encompasses both Latvian & Livonian history across all ages. You can peruse, look and explore the items displayed as it is a museum where you are allowed to touch and get close to the things of Latvian & Livonian past.

The first floor of the house starts with a sheltered entrance and you enter a small kitchenette. Hidden in the ceiling is a hatch with fold-down stairs to the attic bedroom. In the bedroom, you will find a king-sized mattress-bed and a single mattress-bed on each side of the hatch. Both beds face the window with a very nice view outside.

Kitchenette has a portable electric hob (stored away in the furthest cabinet) and all the necessary dishes, cutlery, pots, pans and assorted utensils for cooking. Salt and some spices will be available and you are always welcome to borrow them from us. Just Google the Latvian name of the spice, before you ask. :)

On your right, you enter the main room of the house. Here you will find a re-purposed carpenters desk, which has a coffee maker, kettle and assorted items for tea and coffee you might need. Next to it is a small fridge.

The large room continues to a fireplace. During cold days, we will come to the house and light it and the old stove. During these days you are welcome to use the old oven and hobs to cook and heat up water. We always provide two free bushel of firewood for warm days, in case you would wish to use the firewood oven.
Opposite the fireplace is a large sofa, which can be transformed into a double sized bed.

Further in the room, you have a dining table, a single bed and various antique items to look at and enjoy. You are allowed to sit on all the chairs in the house! :) However, the antique closets are not for use.

IMPORTANT: SHARED SPACE
While you will be staying in the museum, we might ask to have a 30 minute or so access every once in a while (only during the day), to give a quick look of our Museum collection to private tour groups, which have booked to eat lunch and learn history with us. We will inform you if any groups book the Museum or have already booked it and check with you first.
In return for this slight inconvenience, we will provide you with a free traditional set lunch or dinner (your choice)! :)

IMPORTANT TOPIC: FOOD
You can order breakfast with us, for €9 per person. Please let us know about your dietary preferences as we can look to accommodate almost any diet or dietary restriction.
"Stūrīši-Branki" over the years have gained a reputation of our massive & tasty breakfasts. These breakfasts are large enough for you to have something left over for a lunch snack or a proper lunch, depending on appetites.

However, when it comes to food, you will be taken care of. Our family is famous with our food generosity. If you stay with us at a fortunate time, when the local farmers and produce growers bring us something interesting, we always look if we can share them with our guests. If our Chief has inspiration, we also frequently provide guests with side-dishes for dinner (such as potatoes, veggies, dessert and so forth).

Additionally, Mazirbe has the only store in 20km radius and it is well-stocked with household items, food, drinks and cooking essentials. It is 2 minutes away from us and if you stay longer, you can order specific items with the store directly.

IMPORTANT TOPIC: BEACH
Our house is 5-15 minutes away from the beach, depending on which route you choose to take - the shortest distance will be more central and can get busy over summer weekends. Other routes will take you further away and you can enjoy near-seclusion.
Please note, we do not provide beach towels, please bring your own.

IMPORTANT TOPIC: WC
Please be aware that there is no running water in the house. For your needs, we have bowls and buckets with fresh water for washing-up.
You will have an outhouse next to "Stūrīši" and access to a shared guest bathroom (toilet, shower & sink) next to the premises of our Summerhouse. This bathroom is only shared if guests are staying in the Livionian Homestead "Mežmaļi".

Tiện nghi khách có quyền sử dụng
Guests have keys to their house/room and homeowners have someone always present to mind the houses. Guests can only access their rooms & the outside territory.

Những điều cần lưu ý khác
"Stūrīši-Branki" households have been in our family for generations. Our guesthouse business started spontaneously 11 years ago and we are so happy to be able to live and work in our favourite place on Earth! ♥
Our family operates a private Museum (which also is a guesthouse), and if there are no guests staying, we will be happy to show you the Museum and the materials we have collected.

We have made our best effort to supply our visitors with the best options and amenities, however, the countryside has its limitations, which is why we ask you to respect the nature of the location.

IMPORTANT TOPIC: WATER
Due to the peculiarities of the location next to the sea and also in the Slīteres National Park (protected area with many rare beauties of nature), it is very difficult to have access to endless running water. We live a sustainable lifestyle, conserving water and only using it when it’s available - we have an 8 m deep Well. Please take into account when booking that you won't be able to have endless running showers and we will sometimes have to switch the access off for 3h or so (to let the water replenish in the Well).

IMPORTANT TOPIC: PRICING
If not reserved, a traditional firewood heated sauna (hot rocks and steam) is available for hire to all guests who stay at least 3 nights: €50 for 2 people. It takes a whole day to prepare, so please give us as much notice as possible.
We make sure to keep the house warm and always give two bushels of firewood for free during the summer in case the guests want to have an extended use of the fireplace. If you wish to do cooking on the traditional stove or enjoy more fireplace, each further bushel would incur a €5 surcharge.

IMPORTANT TOPIC: CASH
We highly advise bringing cash, as otherwise, you will have to drive to Dundaga (20km) or Ventspils (70km) to be able to visit an ATM. Mazirbe has the only store within 20km radius and a café where you can pay by card.

IMPORTANT TOPIC: WiFi
Our households do not have internet of any kind.

Overall, Mazirbe is a true getaway from the world. Phone reception has to be earned (aka you have to find your spots or use the right operator) and there is no free WiFi in the village. But don’t worry, if you do need to stay connected and find the right spot to keep your device, you will achieve amazing internet speeds and will be able to get things done. We will provide advice on how to best achieve this.

Mazirbe, Dundaga Municipality, Latvia

Mazirbe has a very rich past and has an important role as the main centre of Livonian culture. Our households are right next to the Livionian Community Centre where you will be able to learn further and see the impressive building, which served as a key point of many historical events.

Mazirbe village centre is not completely rural due to the villages' history - in fact, it is one of the most developed on this side of the coast. Surrounding the village are forests, fields and the Baltic Sea beach which are all part of the Slītere National Park and are wild locations. Even in the densest tourist season, you need to really try to find more than 100 people on the beach. If you don’t mind an extra couple minutes’ walk, you can find a spot where you won’t have any neighbours for 100m-1km. :)

The village is in a perfect location to explore Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre, Miķeļbāka, Ovīšu lighthouse, Slīteres lighthouse, Slīteres National Park and the surrounding villages which all are significant to Livionian history. Košrags (& you can also include Pitrags) in Kolka direction and Sīkrags in Ventspils direction are easily doable one-day walks.

MAY:
Flowers in bloom & they bloom later than in the city. Come to us if you wish to extend the beautiful spring for a couple weeks more. The weather is usually clear and crisp. It is slightly colder than inland. The village and nature are only occupied by locals, so it’s great to see how everyone is getting their spring chores done and to enjoy complete seclusion & tranquillity.

JUNE:
Flowers in bloom continue, the weather during the day is warm, often even full 20+C degrees, colder at night. This is the month when the days get very long; around the 21/22 of June, summer solstice can be observed – longest day and shortest night. It truly doesn’t get dark even when the sun is set.

In honour of this, the 23 & 24th of June is Latvian Summer celebration “Jāņi” or “Līgo”, where everyone in the country has a national holiday and goes full-out on festivities. Most people leave for the countryside, to light bonfires, cook food and enjoy beer. This is a very busy time and if you wish to book for these dates, please do so well in advance. Please be ready that there will be music and laughter until early hours during this time!
We suggest to stay up all night during the solstice and to observe how both sunset and sunrise can be seen setting & rising in the Baltic Sea! That is a rare sight.

If you are lucky, you can find wild strawberries (very small & very cute) in the surrounding forests.

Be ready for mosquitoes!

JULY:
One of the warmest months in the summer. The Baltic Sea starts getting warmer and, depending on the wind, the water can be very nice. However, please note that the Baltic Sea is a Nordic Sea, so the water temperature will never be tropical! The weather is just divine, the sun is endless and the water is scarce. Events and festivals happening along the coast and there are many opportunities to visit crafts-markets, taste local food and learn about history.

A very bountiful time from local farmers and food producers.

This is the month when proper, wild blueberries get ready in the forest and you are more than welcome to collect and consume them (please check berry guides before doing so!). If you are lucky, you can also find wild strawberries (very small & very cute) in the surrounding forests.

Be ready for mosquitoes!

AUGUST:
1st of August 2020 (or every year on the first August Saturday) is Livionian Cultural Celebration (Lībiešu Svētki) where many prominent people from international politics give speeches, local groups and singers put on concerts and plays. Also, a crafts market is present, where food can be bought too. Get ready that this date will be very busy in the village (cars everywhere) and the night to the 2nd of August will be occupied with music, dancing and festivities.
On the same weekend, Ventspils City Celebration takes place as well.

August, in general, is a month of events and festivals across the entire country, so check-out what you are interested in.

August is the most bountiful time for vegetables and produce from the locals. Also, the forests start producing mushrooms (such as chanterelles) after rain. At the end of August, lingonberries start growing in the forest as well.

August is very warm, hot during the day, all month. From, 20th date onward (depending on season), the nights start to get slightly colder. The Baltic Sea is very warm and depending on the wind direction, you can enjoy a lovely water temp. After the 20th, swimming will start to get more suitable for those that don’t mind colder temperatures.

The fireplace starts to become useful and cosy.

SEPTEMBER:
The Baltic Sea is at its warmest temperature in the first half of the month. The weather is usually very tame, last days of summer, warm during the day, colder in the evenings. This is a proper mushrooming season and lingonberries are available everywhere!
This is the perfect time if you prefer to go on a holiday after the summer rush, want to enjoy peace, have bountiful food and produce, as well as a warm sea.
Definite fireplace enjoyment month!

OCTOBER:

We close the 2nd floor of The Summerhouse as it becomes impossible to keep it warm. We heat the entire first floor and guests can stay in an autumn wonderland, with Sauna. Additionally, the leaves of the surrounding nature have amazing golden-red colour, mixed with the green pine forest. Beautiful and reflective time to visit.

NOV-APRIL:
We are closed. However, Mazirbe remains a beautiful winter location to visit! Especially when there is snow.
