“Pole position in London, the National Gallery is at the very centre of the Trafalgar Square. Started in 1824 and regularly refreshed through the centuries by strategic purchases and donations from the collections of impoverished aristocrats, the cut-off date for art works is 1900 (after which you need to visit Tate Modern or Tate Britain). Still, there’s plenty left to enjoy including a cluster of Leonardo Da Vincis, Botticelli and a superb capsule collection of Post-Impressionists, including Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Seurat’s Bathers at Asnieres. ”

“Trafalgar Square (/trəˈfælɡər/ trə-FAL-gər) is a public square in the City of Westminster, Central London, built around the area formerly known as Charing Cross. Its name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar, a British naval victory in the Napoleonic Wars with France and Spain that took place on 21 October 1805 off the coast of Cape Trafalgar, Spain. The site of Trafalgar Square had been a significant landmark since the 13th century and originally contained the King's Mews. After George IV moved the mews to Buckingham Palace, the area was redeveloped by John Nash, but progress was slow after his death, and the square did not open until 1844. ”

“Commissioned by King Edward VII to commemorate Queen Victoria's death, and designed by Sir Aston Webb and completed in 1912, Admiralty Arch stands majestically at the North east end of The Mall. This Grade I listed curved stone building has three arches and links The Mall to Trafalgar Square, adjoining the Old Admiralty Building. A Latin inscription along the top reads: : ANNO : DECIMO : EDWARDI : SEPTIMI : REGIS : : VICTORIÆ : REGINÆ : CIVES : GRATISSIMI : MDCCCCX : (In the tenth year of King Edward VII, to Queen Victoria, from most grateful citizens, 1910) Admiralty Arch plays an important role on ceremonial occasions, with processions such as royal weddings, funerals, coronations and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games passing through the central arch. The outer arches are used for vehicles and pedestrians.”

“Nelson column is a monument in Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, Central London built to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The monument was constructed between 1840 and 1843 to a design by William Railton at a cost of £47,000 (equivalent to £4,234,498 in 2016). It is a column of the Corinthian order[1] built from Dartmoor granite. The Craigleith sandstone statue of Nelson is by E.H. “A great hidden spot and possibly one of the best views to have a drink. Gets busy in the evening so make sure you reserve a seat if you can. Early evening round 4/5pm is probably the best time to go. Entrance is via The Trafalgar hotel then you go up the lift to the top floor. Then look for signs to Vista/ Skybar and go up the stairs and ask for a view of trafalgar square. Recommended”
