Food scene

Amazing new Italian place in the east end of Toronto. A good excuse to get out of the core if you need one. Beautiful decor and patio, delicious seasonal farm-to-table cuisine, and an fascinating wine list with well thought-out pairings. Don't skip the sardines if you go!

Tiny but super well-reviewed coffeeshop near my place. There's a secret and adorable back patio with picnic tables if it's a nice day. I personally love their ginger coffee, but please note there is no wifi there!

Well-appointed restaurant serving modern takes on traditional Canadian dishes--"bannock" is a First Nations word for bread. They've taken my favourite cod doughnuts off the menu but the maple bacon ceasar is still on there so it's well worth a trip.

If you've got a special occasion to celebrate, may I suggest Byblos? Mouth-watering Moroccan cuisine and it's just down the block.

Great Thai food on the fancier end of the spectrum (but still very reasonable for downtown Toronto). Bonus--it's a one-minute walk!

Arts & Culture

The architecture alone is worth the ten-minute walk: it's designed by Frank Gehry and is lovely to just walk around in. It's also a great way to see some of Canada and the world's greatest artists, and there's a kid-friendly space in the basement(and a huge gorgeous park out back). Admission is free Wednesday 6-9pm, but it's otherwise still very affordable. There are also First Thursdays on the first Thursday of every month, where the AGO is open late and serves alcohol and food and there are lots of performances and activities.

If you're looking to do some free sightseeing, one favourite of mine is the ever-changing walls along Rush Lane, aka Graffiti Alley. It's just south of Queen Street so you can always dip up for some snacks or to charge your camera, but it's a great photo opportunity and exercise combined. Plus, it will be brand new on your next visit.

Live music every night of the week in an unfussy pub atmosphere. A neighborhood staple.
