We love Fountains Abbey, ideal place to visit in any weathers. If you have children there is a good playground as well as plenty of space for them to run around. They do have a lot of events running throughout the year, so it is worth having a look at their website. The dramatic abbey ruins at Fountains are the largest monastic ruins in the country. Step back into a rich and dramatic past and imagine what life would have been like for the monks who first came here all those years ago. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/fountains-abbey-and-studley-royal-water-garden

Grimwith (pronounced Grim'ath) is accessed from the B6265 road approx 2 miles from Grassington. It is Yorkshire Water's largest reservoir. This is an ideal place to take a walk but wrap up warm can get very windy as quite exposed. At the eastern end of the reservoir is a grade II listed barn. The Cruck Barn used to be further west, but was reconstructed on its present site above the waterline to preserve it. This type of barn is rare for the Yorkshire Dales. Its origins were in the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1982 when the reservoir was extended. Peaceful and tranquil place to walk.

You can either drive there or walk. If you walk then go into the main square and at the bottom turn left towards the national car park. Walk through the gates to the far left hand corner. You will find a gate which will lead you down a path towards the river and waterfall. Once at the river/waterfall go over the bridge and continue following the path until you hit the road. Turn right and follow the road up the hill. At the crossroads go straight over and follow the road (signposted Linton) You will reach a very beautiful village with the pub located on the green. Traditional pub with an open fire. Food is excellent with normally at least three veggie options. Good portions but does get very busy so go early or ideally try and book. Mainly a tourist attraction of amazing caves this place does also have a lovely café. You can just visit the café if you prefer not to explore the caves but I would say they are very impressive. Their sausage rolls are well worth a visit alone or simply stop off just for an ice cream when coming back from Patetely Bridge or Harrogate.
