This is our favorite place to hike! This state park has historical elements as it was built after WW! by the Doughboys. The hike follows 2 rivers which converge into a spectacular falls. Picnic areas are well maintained. It is a must see!

The Wisconsin Concrete Park is an outdoor museum with 237 embellished concrete and mixed media sculptures built between 1948 and 1964 by Fred Smith, a retired lumberjack and self-taught artist and musician. Installed throughout Smith’s northwoods property in Phillips, WI, the site is a historical panorama of life-size and larger-than-life sculptures depicting people, animals, and events from local, regional and national history, from local lore, and from Smith’s expansive imagination. The Wisconsin Concrete Park is a masterwork of 20th century vernacular art environments. Throughout the site Smith depicted history as an elastic entity in which local and national people, events, and histories are intermingled with animals, all sharing a common landscape.

Site of John Dillinger and the Dillinger Gang's epic shootout with the F.B.I., the Lodge is also the modern day filming location for the Universal Studios film starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, PUBLIC ENEMIES. There are still bullet holes in the windows and walls!

The Apostle Islands National Park is about 2 hours from the cabin and if you are up early can be done as a day trip. It's a beautiful drive! You would need reservations ahead of time to take the boat tour to the lighthouses or the ferry to Madeline Island. We have done the trip several times and it is always a hit with guests!

Extensive bike trails in this area of Wisconsin! They go from Mercer, through Manitowish Waters to Boulder Junction and beyond. Our favorite sections are in Manitowish Waters to Boulder Junction and then the section by Crystal Lake in Sayner. We like to pack our suits and a picnic lunch and park at Crystal Lake. The ride goes through forest and when you are done you can cool off in the lake.

Great little place to rent (inexpensive) kayaks or canoes for the Flambeau River. This is a beautiful stretch of water and one of our favorite trips. You can fish as you go (with a license of course.) We always see eagle and sometimes beaver, deer etc... Be sure to call ahead to reserve.

Kayaking, tubing or canoeing on the Manitowish River is another one of our favorite activities. We have seen a lot of wild life, including a bear crossing the river in front of us!

Springstead is a small, but close community. The Trading Post is a small store next to our driveway. You can get a fishing license and bait here. We have a small resale shop, open Wednesday and Sunday noon to 4, which supports our fire department. Springstead Lake Lodge is 5 minutes away and has a delicious Friday fish fry and beautiful sunsets on the lake. Birches is about 10 minutes down the road and serves homemade pizza and appetizers (no full meals.) They have a beautiful patio area on the lake and arcade games for kids. North of the Border has good Mexican food, but not a view.

Mercer is about 20 minutes away and is your best bet for groceries (Snow's Grocery.) The Wampum shop is a cute store for kids to explore, Impulsive Necessities at Whimsies is a cute store for adults. There are some good pub style restaurants and the Liberty Tap Room (we like it) which has bags and other games for adults, good beer, wine and bourbon. There is a cute little public beach with playground equipment and a pier kids can jump from.
