Neighbourhoods

Varsity view neighborhood is next to the University of Saskatchewan. The area is a mix of families, working age individuals, retirees and students. It has some of the most beautifully matured elm tree streets in the city, next to Nutana. Central to the University of Saskatchewan, Downtown and Broadway district, this location puts you in the center of the action. Seek out President Murray park which is a large green space with mature evergreen trees in the center of the neighborhood.

This restaurant used to be called Alexander's and was a mainstay of the Varisty View neighborhood. It was remodeled during the early pandemic era, and relaunched as Filosophi (under different management). The food here is very good, although it tends more to the really good comfort food, true foodies may look elsewhere. If you're looking for a place with great food, great desserts, or a pint of beer at the bar, this place is next-door to Subway, and very close! Perfect walking distance from The Cottage to ensure you don't have to drive home after a few beverages at the upstairs lounge. See their website for the menu and instructions to order take away - https://filosophi.ca/

If you're more about those cool little eclectic diner/coffee shops, the D'Lish might be your speed! This place is just a tad further by foot, approximately 15 - 20 minutes depending on how fast you walk, towards Broadway. This place has great baking, very good coffee and hearty yet healthy lunches. This is a small independent place who opened up a drive thru shack in the back during the pandemic, and has elected to keep it open (we think). Walk straight down Elliott Street (south side) until it becomes University Drive. Keep going, and at one point, it's just a block to the left. The walk down University Drive is a beauty, particularly if you like to look at older houses. Don't forget to stop and gaze at the Petit House right along the path, designated a heritage property in Saskatoon. Retail

Brunskill Pharmacy is right down the street by 2 blocks. This pharmacy is only open during the day, and not open on Sundays. But if you are in need of a pharmacy it's super-close. Because Brunskill serves the Luther Tower residences across the street, they actually carry a pretty great selection of greeting cards, gifts and biscuits. Light groceries are available, as well as toiletries, medicines and all that good pharmacy stuff. There is also a bus stop on either side of the street next to Brunskill which serves Route 81 (see other info on route). https://brunskillpharmacy.com/

The Campus Confectionary is a small corner convenience within walking distance of The Cottage. Smaller than Brunskill Pharmacy, but open longer hours, expect this place to be open closer to 9PM. A light grocery with essentials is available here.

Something to do with smaller kids, go visit the dairy cows at the University of Saskatchewan! This spot is a little bit harder to find, but if you follow the link below precisely, you should find it! This is about a 15-20 minute walk from The Cottage through the University of Saskatchewan. A bit reward for those who can find it, and like cows. https://goo.gl/maps/jBqhHYoDQi6fK3bN6

Located literally just across College Drive, the University of Saskatchewan is a great place for a stroll! In particular, the central greenspace (The Bowl) has a quaint little walking circle. The paths are well maintained and lit, and the grounds are very nicely maintained. Many of the original buildings are quite historical. The Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Center is a more modern building with significant architectural interest. The Bowl - https://goo.gl/maps/UJtK19YpQuEuWSyT7

This spot is a hidden jem! A little bit farther from The Cottage, this space is is walkable within about 20 - 30 minutes. Although this place is great for families, be aware that there is pond and small brook that definitely requires supervision. This space is maintained as part of the grounds at Innovation Place, which is a publicly run research park just north of the University of Saskatchewan. Driving works too, just look for parking meters on the traffic circle south/east of the gardens. The roads in this area are complex, so ensure you give google maps a good study. The gardens are set back from the roads, so it's possible to drive by and not notice. Find a parking spot and explore by foot to find the garden gates. https://goo.gl/maps/FYUF8YEFj8L9kSRy6

This spot is all about family fun. When the weather is nice, walking there from The Cottage can be done in about 20 - 25 minutes. There is a large playground with a big slide and small zipline. In the summertime there are also interactive water features in the playground. The park also includes 3 amusement rides (Nutrien Park) that you can buy tickets for: carousel, Ferris wheel and a train. The carousel is original to the park, so quite neat for any history buffs. During the times when the rides are open there is also a concession stand with confections for sale. Public washrooms are in the same building as the concession stand. The Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan site has recently been redone, and is a cool place to check out even if it's not in session. Taking in a theater production is certainly very cool, but other events are also staged at this site.
