Hikes

Pulpit Rock is the most popular Nelson hike. Locals treat the trail like an outdoor gym and sometimes it feels like half the town is out hiking! The Pulpit trail offers a solid workout over switchbacks, ending in a scenic overlook of town. Hiking further to Flagpole rewards you with an even bigger panorama of the river valley – it’s worth the extra effort when you have the time!

Lyon’s Bluff is a brand new trail climbing up Nelson’s north shore to a big view of town. It’s a great alternative to the busy Pulpit Rock Trail, but offers just as much of a workout and final viewpoint!

A walk in the woods, a bubbling creek, several bridge crossings! What could be better? The Sproule Creek trail traces a historic wagon road up to an old mill site.

A pleasant loop of trails that weaves along the forests and beaches of Kokanee Creek Provincial Park! This is a great early-season hike at low elevation, or come back in late August to see the spawning kokanee.

The trail circling Gibson Lake is short and splendid, wrapping along the lakeshore and crossing tributary streams. Most folks will want to venture onwards and upwards into Kokanee Glacier Park, but if you’re looking for an easy hike or something to pair with the Old Growth Trail, then Gibson Lake is worth the drive!

All aboard the Great Northern Rail Trail! It’s not the most exciting hike, but the rail-grade is easy, gentle walking. The destination of this hike is white sandy Troup Beach at Five Mile Point – a great picnic spot with shallow water, sandbars, and solitude.

The old growth trail up Kokanee Creek is a short and spectacular hike. The cedars are ancient and massive, reaching up towards the sky and back across the centuries.
