The Paddy Creek Wilderness is a 7,019-acre wilderness area, one of eight wilderness areas protected and preserved in Missouri. Big Piney Trail is a 17-mile (27 km) long loop that traverses this wilderness area and is popular among avid backpackers. The 17-mile (27 km) loop trail can be hiked as a 10-mile (16 km) stretch (north section) or the 7.5-mile (12.1 km) south section. Horseback riding is also common on the Piney Creek Trail. The Paddy Creek Recreation Area is nearby, and offers many camping amenities. There are many single sites, and a few double sites available. There is also fishing access on the Big Piney River, via a trail access from the campground.

The Big Piney is the largest tributary of the Gasconade River and is rated as one of the best fishing streams, especially in its upper and middle reaches where you can view limestone bluffs topped with pines and where there is a good chance to see wild turkey. Numerous good-sized and beautiful springs feed the river so that it is floatable throughout the summer.

Joleen and Brian Durham, the founders and owners of Piney River, bought their home and 80-acre farm in Bucyrus in 1998. The refurbished old barn, today called the “BARn,” was the official brewery for Piney River Brewing Company when it opened its doors to the public for the first time in March 2011. The BARn is still home to a thriving taproom that’s open every weekend. The old brewhouse space and some of the equipment is where Joleen and Brian are “playing” with their new Farm Raised Funk beers.
