Since the museum's founding in 1883, its permanent collection of American art has remained one of its most impressive assets, with the addition of the General Motors Center for African American Art. However, the museum houses more than 65,000 diverse pieces, ranging from Egyptian mummies to French-Impressionist paintings. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and hosts a number of visiting exhibitions, concerts, and events year-round.
