An eclectic bunch of wine-weathered locals, stylish European tourists and young, model types make up the late-night bar crowd, while the three dining rooms suit all moods, from the bright, covered garden behind the kitchen, to the clandestine loft where a fortune teller holds court, to the buzzy main dining room. Decorated with nudes, jazz portraits, and tin ceiling and walls, this is where Europeans, kitten-like models, and longtime locals linger over thick steak au poivre with crispy frites, and fleshy steamed artichokes with thick dipping vinaigrette.

Drinks & Nightlife

Chatting up owner Gary behind the bar, you’ll find this iconic dive bar is an artist rendezvous by day and classic American restaurant at night. Open since 1817, it’s a New York institution and one of the oldest operating drinking establishments in New York City – and the burgers aren’t bad, either.

The chic rooftop bar above the trendy Hotel Hugo has become a Downtown stalwart. Sipping craft cocktails on the terrace, while soaking up breathtaking views, is all the rage.

The reward is dining in a Mexican dungeon as styled for a Vogue shoot, complete with metalwork, distressed stone walls, and water dripping on the back of your neck (though the owners can probably thank the air conditioner for the added atmospherics). Making up the grinning crowd at secluded booths and in private cells (?): a healthy mix of models, cougars, and maybe John Mayer picking his way through red snapper ceviche, cauliflower and avocado taquitos, grilled octopus tostados, or a plate of tuna tartare with a tamarind glaze. If the food sounds light, you’re right; it’s playing to the delicious crowd.
