Food Scene

The Front Cafe is a local gem - a small coffee shop located just a short stroll away at the Lyneham shops. It's great for a coffee or some breakfast, to watch the locals or to get some work done in a different location. Check their schedule for local art exhibitions and a great variety of musicians.

Drinks & Nightlife

It's just a short stroll to the Dickson shops, where you can enjoy tasting great Canberra District wines and local platters in the friendly and unexpectedly up-scale Canberra Wine House, hidden away at the back of the Dickson Tradies Club. When you've chosen a bottle you like, you can buy it at cellar door prices, and take it with you to one of Dickson's many great Asian restaurants for a delicious meal.

Sightseeing

The best way to see Canberra is to take a walk around Lake Burley Griffin. It's a 5km circuit ('bridge to bridge') on a flat, everything-accessible foot and bike path, which gives you a great taste of the iconic sights of Canberra - from the beautiful National Library and National Gallery to the High Court of Australia, the old and new Houses of Parliament, Anzac Parade and the War Memorial, and the Captain Cook Jet. If you don't fancy walking, you can take a segue tour, departing from the booth near the flag display on the southern side of the lake. If you have time, stop for coffee or lunch at the Bookplate Cafe in the National Library, or visit the Portrait Gallery.

Parks & Nature

One of my favourite places in Canberra! Mulligan's flat is a fantastic wildlife reserve on the northern edge of Canberra, which is populated by kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, sugar-gliders, reptiles and lots of birdlife. You can walk, run or cycle through the park (no cars) - take a picnic and sit down under a tree, or spend some time in the old wool-shed learning about the history and wildlife of the park. If you are able, book a night-time spotlighting tour so you can see the nocturnal animals - especially the endangered quolls, bettongs and curlews that are being reintroduced under the protection of the park's predator-proof fence.

Essentials

It's a short walk to the Lyneham shops where the great little IGA store is open from 8 to 8, 7 days a week and has everything you need (and a great selection of wine and beer). The shops also boast a great butcher, a bakery, pharmacy, newsagent and post office.
