Food Scene

Located amid the mish-mash of eateries on Hardware Lane sits a tiny cafe that pulls in a large number of city dwellers all week. The interior is clean and bright and the space is small, but there are several tables out the front overlooking the lane to help with indoor overflow. The counter is adorned with sweets. Macarons are set in lines next to other baked goods such as almond praline biscuits and croissants, which go down well with coffee in tea party crockery or teapots with colourful, woolly cosies.

A must drink barista coffee... consider top 10 in Australia. Seven Seeds takes its name from the precious cargo which Baba Budan smuggled out of Yemen and into India during the 17th century. By strapping seven seeds of fertile coffee to his waist, Brother Budan broke through the tightly regulated system which had, until then, kept coffee cultivation within the confines of the Arabic world. Because of Baba Budan and his determination to spread coffee around the world, we are now able to source beans from the Americas, Africa and Asia.

By many measures, Thai eatery Chin Chin is the most successful restaurant Melbourne has ever seen. It opened in mid-2011, with queues from day one. But unlike most of its peers, that initial hype hasn’t faded. If anything, it’s intensified. After appearing on MasterChef and a swag of international food blogs, Chin Chin has become as much a tourist destination as a local staple. Unashamed imitations have sprung up in other Australian cities; and owner Chris Lucas has leveraged its reputation to open three more restaurants in Melbourne (Baby, Kong and Hawker Hall) and a Chin Chin in Sydney.

Frank Camorra’s MoVida is the restaurant responsible for setting off Melbourne’s ongoing fixation with modern Spanish tapas. What started as a casual tapas bar has, over the years, developed into an in-demand comedor (dining room)with bookings, often months in advance, essential. The gap left for a more relaxed tapas bar is filled by sister restaurant MoVida Next Door. Dinner at MoVida can quickly turn into a pricey occasion as it's hard not to get carried away. The menu of tapas and racion is designed to be shared – but avoid overdoing it early so you can leave room for desert. If you’re feeling adventurous, let the kitchen order for you and sample a cross-section of signature dishes.

Johnny Di Francesco won the best Margherita pizza in the world, he has incorporated tradition and heritage into his pizza making process at 400 Gradi, creating what are arguably some of the better pizzas in town. Any good pizzaiolo knows that a quality pizza starts with the dough. It’s a thoughtful, evolving and time-consuming process. Di Francesco realised this and decided to go back to the basics, taking a course with the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, a Naples-based international association of which he has since become the Australasian principal.

For food, drink, setting and atmosphere, Trunk Bar and Restaurant ticks just about every box. Whether seeking a quiet beer and snack with a friend, a dining experience of serious intent, a breakfast meeting or a drink after work, this great space satisfies. Originally a 19th century synagogue, Trunk takes inspiration for its name from the 150-year-old coral tree in its sunny courtyard. The modern, bricked exterior has a leafy croft for those seeking shade, and is a sturdy answer to the city’s many rooftops. Inside, classic high ceilings are supported by stone and generous dark wood finishes, which give the space a smart yet relaxed bistro feel.

Train carriages park on roof top! Don't hold us to it, but we think beers are better when consumed in a Hitachi train plonked on top of a Collingwood office block. Easey's is best known for insane burgers and fried snacks that'll make your arteries threaten to give way, but there's a decent craft brew line-up on tap and the sweeping views of Collingwood isn't so bad either. Just come early to score a seat on the trains.

The rooftop at Marquis of Lorne is arguably the best part of this grand old Fitzroy pub. The bathtub with tinnies make it feel like you're at a house party every time, and the burgers and steaks from the dining room downstairs go down a treat in the sunny spot by the Carlton sign. Even if you're not a local, the neighbourly vibe will leave you feeling like you're one.

Last weekend the newly launched hotel QT Melbourne opened its rooftop bar, which has views over the city. The split indoor-outdoor space on the 11th floor of the Russell Street hotel can hold 185 people. QT’s in-house designer and stylist, Nic Graham, is behind its design. Outdoor furniture by Melbourne studio Tait is scattered throughout. There are bar snacks available, such as a minced Thai beef on toast with chilli, sweet basil and sambal. Drinks include a summery Yarra Valley Sour made with Healesville’s Four Pillars Gin, fresh lemon, orange blossom and pinot noir – perfect to have in hand when watching the city go by from eleven floors up.

A must visit after work bar. The giant elephant’s head sitting over the DJ booth of the Hasti Bala Bar truly sets the tone for this extension of The Carlton Hotel. Up on the third level of this ever-growing venue, an intimate-yet-wild, jungle safari theme means this is one elephant in the room that nobody can ignore. It’s certainly a place for the senses – people tend to walk in, take a slight step back, then crack a big smile as they spy the plush booths, state of the art sound system and, most importantly, the Carlton’s signature over-the-top decor.

Imperial Hotel happens to be the third oldest pub in Melbourne, so you'll be enjoying the rooftop beer garden on a piece of Melbourne history. Your pint at the top of Bourke Street will come with 360-degree views of the Melbourne skyline and Parliament House. This is a sports-mad venue, which stays open late for all the matches and keeps it classy, clean and comfortable with a traditional English pub vibe, so wear your colours if you want to.

This kitsch, cutesy rooftop promises a raucous garden party in the heart of the city. This sky-high hub has long been a favourite for summer sessions that kick off in the afternoon and end after midnight. The tongue-in-cheek drinks list doesn't skimp on the double entendre, with plenty of mention of jugs, balls and oral pleasure. Yep. The Madame seems intent on making you blush, but chances are that rosy glow will be thanks to the sunshine and booze-sloshed cocktails.

Whisky and Alement have been paving Melbourne nights with precious amber distills since 2010 – they knew that we would grow into that rare Finlaggan that tastes like salt water and fishing nets and, oddly, banana lollies. These guys were also the first to have access to the limited edition and crazy expensive Scotch Malt Whisky Society single cask bottlings – look for the dark green bottles with white labels and number codes in place of distilleries. Previously you had to shell out north of $200 for a bottle, but at Whisky and Alement suddenly you could buy it by the nip and get a taste of the high life for fewer dollars than your weekly rent.

Friends can be flaky, partners can get mean, but a good cocktail bar can make you fall in love with it over and over again, which is why we’re still hopelessly enamoured with Romeo Lane. They have struck that perfect balance of comfort and class: all your cocktails come in beautiful cut glassware; Tom Waits is on the stereo, followed by a little Stones and Levon Helm covering Springsteen; and on a chilly night they’ll fire up the open fireplace to turn the charm offensive up to 11. And we haven’t even got to the impeccable drinks list yet, under the steady hand of Joe Jones, whose palate is responsible for the best drinks in the city right now.

Common wisdom says that to get people to like you simply give them what they want, and that’s Boilermaker House’s MO in a nutshell. They have a jaw-dropping whisky collection that brushes the ceiling behind the gleaming white-tiled bar, and there’s some seriously hard-to-find gems hiding behind the front rows. Sure, it’s over $60 for a nip of the Heartwood Convict Redemption, but that might well be the last shot of this highly regarded Australian whisky in the city. When they say Boilermaker they’re not talking a quick shot and a shit beer -– the Islay Cure All involves a 12-year-old Caol Ila, a gently sweet and hoppy local IPA made with agave and a slice of salami.

The Bourke Street Mall is a pedestrian and tram-only strip running between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets. The mall is Bourke Street's most famous feature and contains retail hubs like Melbourne's GPO, Myer's flagship store and David Jones' second flagship. Concepts for a Bourke Street Mall were drawn up as early as 1964 by Robin Boyd and Frederick Romberg[4] however the ambitious multi-platform design which separated cars from pedestrians was never realised. Plans were eventually scaled down with pedestrians sharing space with a grade level tramline. The pedestrian mall was officially opened in 1983 by Their Royal Highnesses, Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales.
