Places to Visit
The castle is five minutes’ walk from the back of the house, along St. Mary’s Walk, through St. Mary’s Church, passing Anne Brontë’s grave.
People have lived on the headland since the Iron Age. Once a Roman signal station and settled by Vikings the castle has a rich history, including occupation during the Civil War when it was besieged by Parliamentarian troops and damaged in 1645.
This is a great walk, with stunning views. One cannot help but try to evoke images of the many different people who lived, worked and died here and imagine what their lives were like.
Walking along the Castle Dykes pathway you can make your way down to the Harbour to North Marine Drive and Lunar Park (small funfair).

A drive to the top of Oliver’s Mount gives way to the most wonderful views of Scarborough. There is a nice tea shop/restaurant at the top, near the town’s War Memorial. A motorbike festival is held here in September each year.

The North Bay has the new Sands development with Blue Crush restaurant/bar, Dexter’s surf shop where you can book lessons and hire equipment. Beach shops, ice cream parlours. There are donkey rides in season and a small skate park on the hill. Beach huts can be hired from Scarborough Council. Turn right out of the front door and walk to the top of the hill.

Dalby Forest is very beautiful and has easy access and walking conditions for the less serious walker. This is well worth a visit with or without a picnic.
