The National Zoological Gardens, Dehiwala – more commonly called Colombo Zoo – has a long history. In the early years of the 20th century, John Hagenbeck, brother of the famous animal trainer, Carl Hagenbeck had established the Ceylon Zoological Gardens as a company at Dehiwala. The 11-acre plot of land was used by the Hagenbecks as a collecting depot for captured wild animals destined for the Zoos of Europe. However, the company was bankrupt in 1936 and was purchased by the Government.
Initially the Zoo came under the purview of the Government Agent of Colombo and was headed by a Superintendent. When it was made an autonomous department in 1946, the main aim was to satisfy people’s curiosity and thus the Zoo was more focused on entertainment rather than conservation.

Black corals adorn the sides of the ship and thousands of anthias and damselfish swarm around the top like butterflies. With a maximum depth of 26m this is an easy relaxed dive with plenty of photo opportunities.

Pigeon Island National Park
Floating in the great blue 1 km offshore, Pigeon Island, with its powdery white sands and glittering coral gardens, tantalises with possibilities. A nesting area for rock pigeons, the island is beautiful enough, with rock pools and paths running through thickets, but it’s the underwater landscape that’s the real star. The reef here is shallow, making snorkeling almost as satisfying as diving, and it’s home to dozens of corals, hundreds of reef fish (including blacktip reef sharks) and turtles.
Note that the recent surge in tourism has damaged the reef to a degree, so don't expect a pristine marine environment. Close to the shore, some day trippers stomp all over shallow coral.
The Pigeon Island National Park Ticket Office is on the beach in front of the Anilana hotel. As with all national parks in Sri Lanka, the various fees and charges are myriad and can add up. The local boat owners association, Nilaveli Private Boat Service, has a hut next to the park office where you can arrange trips. Most dive shops offer trips here, as do many hotels. The busiest times to visit are May to September.

After killing the king, Kasyapa was fearful that his half-brother, Prince Moggallana, would return from exile in India and rightfully claim his crown. This fear drove him to build the majestic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, protected not only by the rock’s height and sheer sides, but also by stone barracks filled with soldiers and a crocodile-infested moat. He also developed an extensive, incredibly advanced system which allowed water to move between the top and the bottom of the rock, not only to ensure that he and his family had water to drink, but also to fill the beautiful water gardens which he created at the foot of the rock.

However, only after the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka did the caves flourish. It is traditionally thought that Valagamba of Anuradhapura had the caves converted into a temple. He was exiled from Anuradhapura at the time and was seeking refuge from South Indian usurpers. He spent 15 years in hiding within the caves before reclaiming his capital and as a way of thanking the gods built the temples with the caves he once hid inside.
The statues and art found within the cave truly highlight the artistic abilities of those living in the past. It is well persevered and a walk through the caves will prove to be both insightful and a very memorable experience.

This was our favourite beach within all of Sri Lanka. The bay was enclosed with tall skinny palm trees, crystal clear water and the waves big enough for beginners to jump on a surfboard.

Rekawa Beach, 10km east of Tangalle town. This beach has a growing reputation as the turtle-watching beach and many people head down here during the season (April to September) to witness the turtles come to the shore to lay their eggs, a whole 120 of them!
The tours run at 8:00 pm every evening by volunteers and locals from the non-profit Turtle Conservation Project and they do request 1000 LKR ($6 USD) to join the tour. If you don’t see the turtles, you can come back the following night without paying again. The whole process can take up to 2 hours from when the turtles first leave the ocean so be prepared to get comfortable on the sand!
