My favourite places to eat, drink, shop and visit

Ok, so I love clothes but I don't like to pay too much for them and my ethos is to reduce, reuse and recycle. So where do I go to source my stuff …. well I like to go to the Claygate Scouts and Hinchley Wood jumble sales, car boot sales and especially charity shops. But if I really need something special I'll go to John Lewis or Bentalls In Kingston. Food wise, I am a vegetarian and a fan of Indian and Thai restaurants. I also love to go to traditional English pubs which have delightful locations and fantastic décor. Claygate is a great place for walking and cycling in the surrounding woods. You can aim for Black Pond, Telegraph Hill, Whinney Hill or The Star at Leatherhead.
Love the big portions of chips for sharing and the mushy peas. A cheap meal to share with friends, and you can order by phone and then pick up your take away. Btw - they only accept cash payment.

Great food at the Red Rose in Surbiton and you can get there on the K3 bus from Claygate. There are nice pubs for a pre drink quite close by including the Victoria on Victoria Road, Surbiton and Excellar a delightful French style bistro, also on Victoria Road.

Maisie is in Thames Ditton - a 10 minute drive from Claygate. Lovely setting and delicious food. The Swan pub across the road and the Red Lion a few doors away are great pubs for a drink before the meal.

The Hare and Hounds in Claygate is a great traditional English pub with a log fire and good food. It is only 10 minutes walk from my house. They often have live music.

You can find really good quality clothes in great condition for a really good price and the profit all goes to charity. The shop is well laid out, clothes are clean, there is a changing room, helpful staff and the stock constantly changes.

This shop is run by Ruth, a friend of mine, and her many volunteer helpers. It is full to the brim with excellent quality second hand clothes and bric a brac. You never know what you will find there! Very often items of clothing and shoes are unused and still with the tags on.

What a lovely old pub with a great garden for the summer months, overlooking a pond and Weston Green. If you don't have a car, you can get an Uber here which wouldn't break the bank.

What a treat it is to go to the Everyman Cinema in Esher. There is an art deco style bar in the entrance lobby, and you can take your drinks in to the cinema where you sit on sofas and have your own little drinks table. You can order food too to eat whilst you watch your movie.

This is a lovely pub which is about 25 minutes walk from my house but you could get the K3 bus there. It has recently been refurbished and tapas are served there, but I haven't tried the food yet. A really nice thing to do is to go for a walk up Beaconsfield road and take a public footpath over the railway bridge, through the woods and then up Arbrook Lane, ending up at the Swan for a drink.

This amazing palace is where the infamous Henry VIII lived who had two of his six wives beheaded. It is a must see …. You don't have to go in to appreciate it though. It is very expensive to go in and you can see so much from the riverside. Bushy Park is opposite the Palace and you can take a picnic there and go for a walk amongst the deer. You can also walk from the Palace by the river side to Kingston. Takes about 30 minutes and reward yourself with some refreshments at Pistachios in the Park, a little tea room with freshly baked home made cakes.

A lovely place to go for an afternoon out, a walk around the gardens but it is expensive. There is a good gift shop and plant nursery - also pricey.

This is my local for food shopping. It is a great shop selling quality food and we love the ethos that Waitrose care about the welfare of the animals farmed by their suppliers. They have good reductions too at the end of the day.

Local Walks

Nice walk down Telegraph Lane in Claygate up to the top of Telegraph Hill where you can find Semaphore House (privately Owned). There are lots of walks around Telegraph Hill. You could even walk over the other side and come out in Manor Road South. Turn right and walk into Hinchley Wood for refreshments at Georgies cafe. If you are too tired to walk all the way back, you can get the K3 bus back to Claygate.
