Things to see and do

To get to Garnish Island you need to take a 10 minute boat trip, where if you are very lucky you might get to see seals and other sea life on the way. Bear in mind that you will be charged both for the boat journey to the island and again for entry onto the island. There is a cafe on the island or it would be a great destination for a picnic. Fun fact, Garnish Island is the only location in Ireland where bananas can be grown thanks to the Gulf Stream. Also the island has been visited by many celebrities such as Maureen O'Hara & Pippa Middleton.

Carrignass Castle is the impressive remains of an imposing 16th century tower and walled courtyard situated on the ouvane river. Built in 1541, it was the ancestral home of the O'Sullivan Beare Clan and in 1602 the Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare led his followers passed its gates on a march to leitrim that would see him join the flight of the earls from Ireland. That flight itself marked the sad end of the Gailic civilization in Ireland. Kealkils stone circle can be reached on foot from here and the castle is also connected to the sheep's head way and St. Finbars way.
