Food scene

Want a snapshot of the food scene in LA? Just take a lap around Grand Central Market and you’ll get the idea. The last several years have seen an influx of new vendors, but the market has managed to keep much of its original charm. On your first visit, we definitely recommend going for the carnitas tacos at Tacos Tumbras A Tomas, but most everything is good here - we would drive across town for the falafel at Madcapra, the pastrami at Wexler’s, and the panang curry at Sticky Rice. For the full breakdown, consult our Grand Central Market Guide while you’re waiting in line, and see how many places you can hit before you have to call a timeout.

Yea, you’ve heard of In-N-Out. Maybe you’ve even been to one, in Vegas or (god forbid) Arizona. But you haven’t really had an In-N-Out burger until you’ve had one in LA. Pick any location you can find, say “double double, animal style” to anyone wearing a paper hat that will listen, and prepare for nirvana.

Salt and Straw may not be an LA original (thank you again, Portland), but it’s still the best ice cream being served in the city. Just don’t expect to come here looking for your simple scoop of chocolate. Flavors at Salt and Straw range from exotic to straight-up unheard of. Roasted strawberry coconut, avocado and Oaxacan fudge, and a black olive brittle and goat cheese that will change what you thought was possible for ice cream. And now with five locations citywide, you’re never far away from one.

One of LA’s all-time greatest restaurants, and one that played a significant part in the rapid development of the still booming downtown Arts District. Just know that a meal at Bestia is not a casual or quick occasion. Make a reservation way in advance, set aside two hours and a few hundred bucks and do it correctly.

The best tacos in taco town—don't miss the cochinita pibil. The entire menu at these four no-frills locations consists of 12 tacos, plus two quesadillas, a selection of agua frescas, and a handful of specials—yet it’s still hard to decide. Every taco is served on a handmade corn tortilla and can be eaten in two to three bites. At $2.75 a pop (okay, $3 for the seafood options), you’d be crazy not to try as many as possible.

Beverly Center has a new place for noodles called Marugame Udon, and it’s possibly one of the most authentic Japanese food experiences in the city of LA. That’s because of the setup: it’s a cafeteria-style fast-casual restaurant that feels like it’s plucked right out of a busy Tokyo block. Prices are reasonable, starting at just $4.50 for a basic kama-age udon bowl which is served in a wooden bowl with a flat bottom. Curry and spicy chicken udon add a bit more flair while things like the beef, tomato, tonkotsu (fatty broth), and nikutama add even more fun. The nikutama features a sweet beef broth served in a moderate portion and topped with a soft-boiled egg. Tempura pieces might include asparagus, sweet potato, shrimp, chicken, and squid, and they each cost $1.00 to $1.80 per piece, and can be enjoyed on the side or in the udon bowl itself.

Jessica Koslow's Sqirl started out as an artisanal toast and jam cafe, but it has since evolved to become possibly the hippest brunch destination in a town packed with hip brunch spots. Devoted fans queue out the door, seeking the sorrel brown rice bowl topped with a runny fried egg, or any of the always-excellent specials. Over-ordering is easy at brunch. There’s housemade sausage, nutty porridge with local milk, and an open-faced toast with kale, tomatillos and hot sauce. Because Koslow got her start with jam, don’t miss the towering, fluffy brioche toast blanketed with fresh ricotta and ultra-local seasonal Sqirl jam.

Los Angeles is home to excellent Southeast Asian food, including spicy Thai. In Silver Lake, experience Chef Kris Yenbamroong’s spicy, sweet and sour Northern Thai fare at his vibrant Night + Market Song, the young chef’s second LA concept. Fried chicken has never been better, and it plays nicely with staples like the crispy rice salad or fiery larb. You may need a Thai iced tea or two to handle the intense Thai chile kick, or pair it with biodynamic wines from Yenbamroong’s creative list.

Sweet Rose Creamery is the perfect modern nod to a classic ice cream shop. Owned by Josh Loeb, Zoe Nathan and Shiho Yoshikawa, the shop has about a dozen flavors in its repertoire, including classic Old Fashioned Vanilla, Salted Caramel, and more novel scoops like husky Earl Grey and spicy Ginger Parsnip. There are dairy-free alternatives, of course, along with frozen bonbons and soft-serve yogurt. If you’re a first-timer, do stick with a classic, like a hot fudge sundae. At Sweet Rose, everything is homemade: They even pasteurize their own dairy.

BCD Tofu House is both historical and delicious. Opened in 1996, it's reportedly the first sundubu jjigae (Korean tofu stew) specialist in Los Angeles, spawning copycat eateries and its own spinoff branches all throughout the Southland. Sundubu is tofu soup, boiled in individual bubbling cauldrons with chile paste and a variety of add-in ingredients, including mushrooms and onions. For some wonderful reason, the owners keep BCD’s two Koreatown locations open 24 hours a day, seven days a week—a smart business move, because nothing cures post-drink blues better than hearty bowls of tofu soup and marinated meats. You can get a combo with kalbi or bulgogi, and every order comes with a large grid of ban chan.

To get a taste of Old Hollywood, forget picking up a star map: Just head into Musso & Frank Grill. The iconic Hollywood haunt has been around since 1919 and has hosted glamorous clientele like Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe. Musso & Frank is one of those rare places in Los Angeles where the staff have been around for generations, making them some of the best conversationalists in town. Though A-listers may settle into the red leather booths, the seats at the bar give a front-row seat for the servers’ stories of Hollywood history (best enjoyed over chops and an expertly crafted martini).

A coffee bar with pastries, a counter for prepared salads and sandwiches to go (or linger over), and a mini-grocery's worth of delicious cheeses, wines, snacks, and frozen treats. Though there are a million tables, they're generally always full; and parking in the area is scarce. That said, it's great for a mid-week breakfast or lunch.

Open since 1939, Pink's Hot Dogs is an adorable, beloved, greasy and cheap fixture of Fairfax. The family-owned institution has won over guests from around the world with its tasty, affordable dogs and colorful signage. While you're at one of the oldest hot dog stands in the country, try the $4.50 chili dog, garnished with chili and onion.

You don’t have to travel too far in LA to find Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles’ namesake dish. Now with seven locations, Southern California’s world-famous fried chicken is conveniently located for most locals. Opt for either a leg or a thigh and a waffle for under $9.

Danny Trejo is one of the most-beloved names in Hollywood, thanks to his iconic mustache and knack for playing the bad guy, but he also does something else magical in Los Angeles that has nothing to do with the big screen: make doughnuts. At Trejo’s Coffee and Donuts — Trejo’s new addition to his growing restaurant empire — you’ll find some of the city’s most-interesting and tasty doughnuts. One winner is the Nacho Raised Donut ($3), with jalapeño, chives, Trejo’s hot sauce and melted cheddar cheese.
