Things To-Do During Your Visit (updated March 2024)

Places to get food and dine that we love!

These recommendations are based on our having eaten at these places many, many times, or bought food there. Denis is a foodie and a bit of a food snob, so he's unlikely to steer you wrong! And he's always happy to answer questions you may have. One other thing to keep in mind is that some restaurants are closed on either Monday or Tuesday, so it is best to double-check the hours online before going. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: For some reason, Airbnb has turned off the ability to edit existing items already in the Guidebook, and only new items can be added. Very strange. But, please note, Salty Girls and the Washington Street location of Pane d' Amore bakery have closed. Hopefully the ability to edit, and not just add, will come back soon. But in the meantime, my apologies.
This is one of our favorite places to eat and drink. Denis has lunch here and a beer or two at least once a week. No visit to Port Townsend would be complete without at least one visit to Sirens. Great beers on taps (including local ones), hand-mixed cocktails, and awesome pub food. Best burgers in town. (Denis's favorite is the Baja Burger, and Tom loves the Pub burger with bacon.) Great fish and chips. And beautiful view from deck with outside seating. This is a 21-and-over place, so no kids at all. During the summer, it can get VERY busy and the deck fills up fast, thus, if you want to sit on the deck, the best plan is to go during off-hours or midweek (if you can). They do NOT take reservations. They open at noon, and during the summer there is often a line that starts to form at 11:45 AM or so, i.e., the rush for the deck. The servers here work hard and are great, but when they are slammed, food can be a bit slower to come out. (A good reason for a second beer!) There is live music many nights, as well as open-mike and karaoke nights. But the schedule changes, so it is best to stop by and ask or give them a call. Sirens now also features to-go food you can order and pay for online.

Great place for a bit more upscale lunch or dinner. The service is always great. They take farm-to-table seriously here, and a majority of ingredients are fresh and locally-sourced. Another great place for fish and chips. I usually order the risotto, which is often a special of the day, usually with fresh local seafood. But all of the food is great here, so you can't really go wrong. Check the website to see what the daily specials are. Upstairs there is a bar, the Mezzaluna Lounge, which you can also access around the corner on Washington Street. You can also buy Silverwater's own custom spice-blends, which make a great souvenir of your visit to PT.

This place has a new owner now, and we have not eaten there since the change of owners. We have heard mixed things, although nothing horrible. The menu leans a little more towards steaks now. The cocktail lounge and wine bar (connected but also with a separate entrance next door) is a great place to unwind and enjoy some small plates. The bar has an excellent atmosphere, and the selection of wines by the bottle is great. There is patio seating. Reservations recommended during summer, especially on Friday and Saturday. Open 4-9. Closed Tuesdays.

If you love bread and pastries and muffins, scones, and cookies, THIS is the place. I love the white Pullman loaf to make French toast. And you've not really had a hot dog until you had one on the hot dog buns they make and sell here. Hamburger buns too. Located in Uptown, you can also pick up a slice of fresh, daily-made focaccia topped with cheese and herbs and such, sort of like deep-dish-pizza. Also be sure to get a Giacometti, which is this long, chewy, cheesy bread-stick. Sometimes they close early if they run out of fresh-baked goods, so best to go in the morning for the best selection. You can get coffee (not great), some chilled beverages, and a selection of cheeses and other items for snack or picnic. They recently started to carry imported pastas, sauces, and olive oils too. There bakery, which also has a small, walk-up window/shop, is located on Washington Street near the marina. There you can buy all of their baked goods, as well as AMAZING grilled cheese sandwiches made-to-order.

Denis LOVES noodle soups and sushi, and Denis LOVES, LOVES this place. He says: "I have had noodle soups all over the world, and I promise, the place is AMAZING. All broths made from scratch. Freshest of fresh ingredients. Everything here is great. For a long time, they were To-Go Food only, because restaurant owners are having a hard time lately hiring enough staff. But now you can eat inside, although you order the food from the cashier, and then they bring the food to the table. To-Go food is also still available, and the containers they use for to-go orders are quite good.

If you need to stock up on some food or groceries, this is the place. Lots of locally grown produce. The Deli has really tasty food that you can get to go. You don't need to be a member to shop there, but you don't get the discount members do. (It's not a big difference in price, actually.)

This is where we buy a lot of our meat and poultry, and all of our seafood. The seafood is always local and extremely fresh. If you love mussels, clams, and oysters, Key City is heaven. And the folks who work there are friendly and helpful. They'll filet any whole (or sometimes half) fish you buy. They also have cheeses and deli meats, mustards, and good selection of moderately priced wine. You can even buy an oyster shucking tool here. We love this place.

A favorite of locals and visitors. In the Marina. Especially great for breakfast. Can be a bit crowded on weekends, but tables tend to turn quickly (which also means that "camping" at a table after you are done eating is frowned upon). Very good food and a Port Townsend original. You won't be disappointed.

Sort of like the local Denny's restaurant. Diner-food, but done quite well. Denis is a particular fan of the country-fried steak and eggs. You can order the menu in the HUGE back bar, but the hours still seem to vary. There is music and dancing at nights in the bar, but best to call to confirm hours. (We've never been at night, because we are home-bodies at night.)

Lovely farm-to-table restaurant that opened four years ago (or so). Denis tried it out during its first year and liked it quite a bit. Probably the most "high-end" restaurant in town, run by two chefs who moved to PT after working at fine-dining restaurants in Seattle. Probably best to make a reservation, at least for Friday or Saturday nights. Great place to get a drink in its cozy bar, and enjoy awesome happy hour appetizers, especially the deviled eggs. Happy Hour is 3-5 pm, and dinner is 5-8 pm. Closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. When the weather is nice, there is beautiful courtyard seating.

You can get it all here. Not recommended for "regular" grocery shopping (prices a bit high), but excellent for grabbing some beer, or picking up that thing you forgot as you head for your picnic. Excellent selection of beer, wines, liquor. There is a pretty solid sushi restaurants in the back of the store, where you can also pickup prepared sandwiches and stuff. Upstairs there is a seating area with wi-fi. They also have an excellent salad bar in the produce section of the place. The new owners have also expanded the souvenirs and gifts that are sold. Coffee drinks too, although service can be a bit slow.

New owners as of this year. For years, this has been a very popular place to get to-go orders, but its popularity has seemed to wane. There also used to be inside seating, but that was not available last time Denis picked up food here. All of the orders come as meals with rice. (You used to get a green salad too, but that seems to have stopped now.) Not the best Thai food, but it is still tasty and filling. If you order "medium" hot, it is barely hot at all (in the opinion of Denis). If you want better Thai food, and inside dining, Khu Larb Thai is your best bet.

Great option if you want to go to Sirens, but not everyone in your party is 21 or over. Same owner as Sirens, and similar food, although there are more dinner-type things on menu here, like a couple of different options for steaks. Excellent burgers. And if you like poutine (and are not from Montreal because this is not that kind), be sure to get a plate and share it. A tasty gut-bomb. Great place for groups and families with kids. Service can be a bit on the slow side when they are busy.

Open during tourist season only, usually starting in May (or so). If it's not raining and suddenly sitting outside and eating a hot dog is what you want more than anything, well this place is for you! Excellent selection of hot dogs and sausages. Fast, friendly service. And lots of picnic tables to sit and to enjoy your hot dog and watch the world go by.

A newer addition to the food scene, but well worth a visit. Owned by a husband-wife team who are always there and working. I love the Scotch egg. The mac-and-cheese is pretty great too (and Denis makes AMAZING mac-and-cheese and is picky about it).

This place used to be Tin Brick, but now has been reinvented, with a new owner, as a vibrant, welcoming restaurant and bar serving fresh seafood and other items with a Mediterranean flair. Same owner here as the Fountain Cafe, which is excellent. Location is downstairs in a basement space, but very cozy and warm. Great for larger groups (we hear).

This place took over from the still-much-missed Howell's Sandwiches. We have not eaten here yet, but have heard good things. Food sort of goes in a French Bistro direction, using locally-sourced fresh ingredients. Denis is particularly excited about trying the Croque Madame sandwich. If you can snag a table on the deck, the views can't be beat. Open 2-9 pm, Wednesday through Saturday, but you may want to call to double-check, because the owners seem to decide not to open some days.

Denis absolutely ADORES this place. There are usually 4-5 freshly made soups that change daily (although chowder is made every day). When a particular soup runs out, you are out of luck. The soup list is usually on a chalkboard outside the front door. One of the best Caesar salads Denis has every eaten, but you better like garlic. Pizzas are great, and cooked to crispy perfection, usually with some char. (If you like pale pizzas of the more Domino's variety, you might not like the pizza here.) And are you in the mood for pie? Well, the pie here is made fresh daily and it is AMAZING. Like the soups, the pies often sell out. So if you have your heart set on boysenberry, order it with your meal to "save" a piece. You really should try this place. Open from 11 am to 3 pm, and 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Closed on Sunday and Monday. There can often be a wait for a table, but tables tend to turn over quickly.

Cozy spot for some lovely, French-inspired cooking using the freshest of ingredients. Just a few steps, to the left of the Haller Fountain, in a historic building. Enjoy a beautifully prepared, higher-end meal. Great wine list. The restaurant is a bit on the small size, thus if it is full, it has a joyful, boisterous atmosphere. People have been going here for special-occasion meals for years and years. If you like duck, and there is a duck special, order that for sure. Reservations recommended. Same owner as the newly opened Nicko's Grotto.

Probably the best Thai food in Port Townsend, with a lovely, old-fashioned dining room. Denis thinks the food is a bit on the mild, Americanized side. So if you have eaten at a lot of great Thai restaurants, you will need to keep some expectations in check here. The better deal is the lunch-only place next door, Little Rose (same owners) where you can choose 3 Thai-dishes and rice to-go for $7.99. Solid food and a great value, although if they get a rush, there can be fewer choices. Just ask if they have new stuff coming out, and then come back in ten minutes. (That is what Denis does.)

Another great pizza for pizza in Port Townsend. They have a small eat-in area for table service, but that's not really their thing. GREAT slices to go, slapped on a paper plate, and wrapped in foil if you ask. Or order a whole pie and take it to the beach or park. (Word of Warning: They can be a bit grumpy here, so just smile. The pizza is worth it. We promise.) Was previously closed on Mondays, but online listing now says open 7 days per week. To-go only. No inside dining.

When Pane d' Amore relocated where its central bakery to close to the marina, they opened a walk-up window that sells everything that is available at the Uptown store, PLUS (drum roll please) great grilled cheese sandwiches made with their amazing breads. The basic grill cheese will only set you back $5, but you can add things like fried egg, tomato, and other goodies for extra. All to-go. And this place is mere yards from the Pourhouse, which is happy to let you bring in food to eat with a beer ordered there. This place opened last summer in the midst of the pandemic. They serve VERY fresh, local seafood, with freshly-shucked oysters and steamer clams both a specialty. If the weather is nice, there are usually tables on the sidewalk for outside seating. Denis has not eaten here yet, but he walks by it all the time (because his office is next door in the Mt. Baker Block Building) and the food looks really good, and customers all look happy.

Like the Blue Moose, this place is where a lot of the people who work in the marina also eat. It is neither large nor fancy, but the food is the real deal, with generous portions. Another Port Townsend vintage original. This place seats maybe 15 people, so it is small. But the atmosphere is the real deal, and a real locals place. There are people who have lived in PT a long time who will fight you to the death defending their claim that Sea J's has the best fish and chips in town. They are really good (but I prefer the ones at Silverwater Cafe). This place can be easy to miss, because the sign outside is on the small size. Same side of the street as the Pourhouse as you drive toward the Marina.

Taking over the spot where Lehani's Deli once was, this place serves real-deal Mexican food, with tortillas made fresh daily right there. The margaritas give the ones served at Sirens a run for the money. And if you are in the mood for an authentic Concha roll for munching on as you walk around, this is the place. The owners are also often at the Saturday Farmers Market. Restaurant is open Thursday through Saturday, 11 am to 7 pm, and 10 am to 3 pm on Sundays. P.S. The other Mexican restaurants in PT are hard to recommend, unless you are looking for VERY typical Americanized food that you can get anywhere in the US.

Another spot that locals love. Open for breakfast and lunch. We have not eaten here, strangely enough. But we have only heard great things, especially all the scratch-made baked good. Lovely outdoor seating.

Used to be called the Nifty Fifty's Diner. Same owners, new name. Very popular with families with smaller kids. We can't vouch for the food, but seems to be standard burgers and hot dogs, with milkshakes and ice cream sundaes and such. They have a small deck for outside seating. Open 11 am to 7 pm all week.

Okay, stick with me now. If you are hungry for a real-deal grilled burrito, this is the place. Tacos are awesome too. Denis gets a coffee and veggie-cheese breakfast burrito here at least once a week. Everything is fresh-made. Oh, and you can buy gas here too, and get a car wash.

Denis had lunch here once long ago, but doesn't much recall if he loved it or not. It is popular, though, especially with visitors. Lots of seafood choices. Outside seating with a lovely view. Not sure if they take reservations, but probably worth a call, especially if you have your heart set on sitting outside. There is also a location in Bainbridge Island.

Denis had drinks here with a friend, but has not tried the food. I have heard both good and not-so-good things. Because this place is located at Fort Worden, probably more of a visitors-spot than locals. Previously offered a Sunday Brunch that was quite popular, but now offering a more limited menu of snacks and such. Open 7 days a week, 8 am to 3 pm. Rumor has it that they may be reopening for dinner and offering a more expanded menu. Best to check the website.

New owners took over this space from a previous Chinese restaurant. Every once and a while, Tom and I would order some to-go food from the previous place, with me first asking Tom, "Are you in the mood for some bad Chinese food?" Based on a single to-go order from lunch (photo above), the new owners seemed to up the food-game considerably. I ordered the Buddha's Delight, a vegetarian option, and the vegetables were super-fresh and not overcooked or over-sauced. The hot and sour soup that came with it was neither hot nor sour, but still fairly tasty. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is strictly strip-mall utilitarian, but nothing to serious complain about. So, if you are in the mood for some American-style Chinese food, this seems like a good option. The containers they use for to-go orders are top-notch too. (Denis plans on reusing them.)

This is a relatively new place, and I have not eaten there yet. But I have heard great things about it. And given that the Mexican restaurants in town are mostly "meh," and pretty Americanized (read lots of melted cheese) in the food, this place is probably worth a try if you are craving a great taco or enchilada. Plus, they definitely focus on local produce.

Sightseeing

There is so much to see and do in the area. These recommendations focus on spots in PT and very nearby. Of course, there are many day-trips to places a bit further out, toward and in the Olympic Peninsula.
If you are in the mood for a movie, this is the place. It also has AWESOME popcorn with a variety of toppings available. (You can just go in and buy the popcorn, if you want and there is not a crowd in the lobby.) Lots of interesting special showings on the weekend, including old movies and plays.

No visit to Port Townsend would be complete without a trip (or two or three) to Fort Worden. There is a great lower area where you can walk on the beach. And an upper area where you can walk around and see all the gun-bunkers and other artifacts leftover from World War II. There are a couple places to get food to eat. And the Marine Science Center is here too. We take our dogs to Park here all the time.

A favorite spot of ours to eat lunch or take the dogs for a walk. You can access the beach from the park and turn right to walk toward Hudson Point, or left and walk toward the lighthouse at Fort Worden. When the tide is out you can walk out FAR! Swing sets and other play-equipment for kids (of the kid in you). There is a great Shakespeare in the Park performance here in the summer.

Not only is the area around the Center a lovely place to stroll and see boats moored and views of Point Hudson, you can see and learn about the "working waterfront" that is so much about Port Townsend and its history. Great shop that sells souvenir-type things, but also "real" boat supplies. This is also ground central for the Wooden Boat Festival each year, the starting point for the Race-2-Alaska, and next to the beach where the Great Port Townsend Kinetic Sculpture Race.

Out on Marrowstone Island, about 15 minutes away, and worth the drive. Beautiful views and lots of places for long walks, including on the beach. Plus it's your excuse to drive across Marrowstone Island. There used to be a great, funky general store on the way to the Park, where you could buy some provisions (or bait or almost anything else), but it caught fire. It supposed to reopen this year though, knock on wood. Definitely worth a stop on the way.

Every year this place evolves. It began as a local farm and cidery (both of which it still wonderfully is), to a place where you can sit outside, order a cider to drink, and get some awesome food. In Port Hadlock, which you would drive through on the way to Marrowstone Island. Multiple beers on tap, and many more by the bottle. The burgers here are awesome, and the main reason to go. Very old school, grilled to order. With GREAT grilled onions if you like those. LOTS of local regulars make this there place to hang out, so you will definitely get a taste of local flavor. Multiple TV's, usually on sports or Fox "News." If your politics are of the more liberal variety, better to not say so out loud. (Denis says he'd only go back again with earplugs, or for to-go food.)

For 20 years or so, this place used to be a small Mexican restaurant, but a series of bars took its place starting several years ago, with Anchor being the one that seems to have had staying power. The chili dogs are supposed to be great, and there is other items all in what we'd call the "bar food" category. Opens at 11 am and closes at midnight. There is often live music featured at night. There doesn't seem to be a website, but there is a FB page.

Manresa Castle has a long history, starting out in 1892 as the custom-built home of wealthy Port Townsend businessman, Charles Eisenbeis. Now a hotel, there are a couple different bars, but the themes and opening hours seem to change a fair amount, so it is best to check online. Note that there is a website for the hotel, Manresa Castle, as well as for the bars and restaurants. One company manages the hotel, and another manages the bars and events and such.

Shopping (Food and Otherwise)

Where I do my "ordinary" shopping for staples and such. (I do the majority of my food shopping at the Food Co-op, which has a relatively limited supply of frozen foods, cleaning supplies, etc.) The Safeway in town looks (and is) bigger, but the selection at QFC is much better, and it usually a bit quicker to find things and check out. If you need to get some hard liquor, this is the place to go also. Wide-ranging selection and good prices.

If you collect cookbooks, like Denis does, this place has an excellent selection. They are always receiving more and different books. Probably more of a sightseeing thing than a shopping thing, but definitely a fun way to spend a half hour or more, wandering among the many antique and vintage things for sale. Set up sort of like a flea market, with many individual "stalls" with things for sale. Denis used to score some good treasures for good prices here, now and again, but the last few times he wandered through, he thought things a bit overpriced, but still a fun place to wander around in. UPDATE: New owners as of six months ago and apparently the selection of sellers is much improved. Denis plans to check it out soon.

This shop has some beautiful items, nearly all made of wood and one-of-a-kind. The website offers a virtual tour and lots of photos, which we definitely recommend that you check out before visiting. Be warned, the owner, who often works there, is VERY particular, and not terribly friendly. For a while (and it still may be going on), you had to knock on the door to enter. So, unless you are really interested in what is being sold there, it might be best to skip this as a place for just carefree browsing.
