If the walls of the Olympic Training Center could speak, they would tell of blood, sweat and tears of America’s finest athletes. See their training facilities, and don’t forget to ask your host about how many calories those athletes consume a day in their custom dining hall. Because there are so many athletes training here, you never know who you are rubbing shoulders with in line to buy coffee. The US Olympic Committee is headquartered downtown, and you will see the dramatic architecture of the new Olympic Museum between downtown and I-25.

And of course there’s Pikes Peak. A new visitor center on top is being constructed, so if you drive up, you will take a shuttle from Mile Marker 16. It is a pay tollway, and the fee is $15 per person or $50 carload in the peak season. More info at pikespeak.us.com. Also, you can hike up from the front side, which is 26 miles, round trip, or drive around to the backside and hike up the Crags and Devil's Playground. Just be prepared for the intensity, and don't take it lightly, because you will be hiking up to 14, 110 feet!

Don’t miss the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort! Enjoy the beautiful lobby, stop by the library, then say hello to the swans. These lavish grounds have seen famous visitors for around 100 years, and you can see their photos in the hallways of the west building on the south end near the bowling alley (not your Uncle Jim’s bowling alley). Just past the Broadmoor is the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, a fabulous zoo built into the hillside.

The architecture and feel of the Olympic Museum is very progressive, yet there are several historical exhibits for those who like the feel of old-school museums. Try out the virtual reality archery and goal-ball (for blind athletes), plus race some Olympic athletes (via technology) on the track. It's pricey, so I suggest you take several hours here to make it worth your while. While you are there, hop next door to America the Beautiful Park with some fantastic playground equipment.

Neighborhoods

Manitou is its own universe. Even before its recreational pot shops, it had a reputation for being a freethinking little town, which predates Colorado Springs, and actually has springs, as opposed to its larger neighbor. The Penny Arcade is our favorite, with cheap old arcade games, and plenty of newer ones as well (that are more than a penny!). Check out the springs at various spots throughout town, but bring your own cup! Lots of shops and restaurants call out; take the time to listen. =) Try out Heart of Jerusalem cafe, owned by our neighbor across the street. If you want to live out the hippie vibe, visit the Mate Factor Cafe, and you might also catch some music at the Soda Springs Park in the evenings in the summer right behind the Mate Factor. The Manitou Incline is famous as a destination for those willing to test their mettle against the 1 mile vertical climb. It’s not an easy afternoon outing; if you are serious about completing this, start as early as you can after the 6am opening. There is a shuttle that runs from Manitou because parking is expensive up by the base of the trail. By the way, my husband, Wade, has the all-time record for the Inclinathon- 13 times up and down (26 miles, get it?) in less than 21 hours. No autographs, please. =)

Along Highway 24 east, duck into Garden of the Gods Gourmet restaurant. It is a full scale restaurant with a take out section and bakery, too. While you are in that area, check out Old Colorado City, with Jake and Telly’s Greek food and Bon Ton Cafe. Go to Jives in the evening for coffee, and catch the Simpich marionettes for one of the most unusual shows in town. There are lots of unique shops, as well as the short-lived seat of the Colorado Territory during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1859. You can learn more at their history museum.

My overall FREE favorite outing in Colorado Springs is the Pioneer Museum, in the stately old downtown courthouse. There are some special exhibits on the history of Colorado Springs as a tuberculosis recovery center, Native American heritage, war and military history, vintage photography and more. Because it’s free, if you don’t get it all done at once, you can come back later. Downtown is fun daytime or evening. Check out Uncle Wilbur’s fountain, where kids and adults can cool off, and which puts on a music and water show every half-hour in the summer. Find this at Acacia Park between Tejon and Nevada (along with some local homeless folks, to be honest). We like El Bambino Pizza and the Skirted Heifer, as well as Paris Crepes. For a late night dinner, check out the Rabbit Hole underground restaurant, with an eclectic menu. Shuga’s is fabulous for lunch, a little south of downtown; try their lavender lemonade! The Wild Goose Meeting House and The Perk often have music in the evening, and Loyal Coffee and Good Neighbors are other fun spots.

Hiking and Biking

There are great trails in town, like Garden of the Gods, Palmer Park and Ute Valley Park, which have both hiking and biking trails. On the edge of town you will find Helen Hunt Falls, Seven Bridges, and Captain Jacks. Trails on Pikes Peak include the Barr Trail, the Crags, Devils Playground, and Ring the Peak. It's no joke- drink lots of water, especially if you are from a lower elevation. Starting out at 6200' feet is rough, but heading up onto Pikes Peak and the mountains will exacerbate the issue, so stay hydrated. Sit down where you are if you feel faint; don't take a risk of falling.
