It was known as "Uda Wasala Watta" in Sinhalese meaning "the garden above the royal palace". The reserve also contains a great variety of uncommon plants and species, including extensive birds, monkeys, snakes and reptiles.
Being easily accessible and containing a variety of flora and fauna the forest has a great educational and recreational value, especially for foreign tourists and bird watchers.

The architectural style is Neo-Gothic, and the interior is a piece of English Victoriana.
This Church houses the only existing pipe organ in Kandy.
