Cafes, Coffee & Brunch Spots

My favourite local cafe and brunch spot is Five Points. It is located at 288A Harold's Cross Road which is a 5 minute drive or a 25 minute walk away. They serve tasty and unique food with Irish produce and take their coffee very seriously! There is also an outdoor area in the back as well as table out the front. Good vibes only & dogs welcome

Bibis - 14A Emorville Ave - 25 minute walk. Popular spot in the middle of the trendy neighbourhood of Portobello, this is a fantastic spot with really delicious food, the turkish eggs are a particular favourite of mine. Portobello would be a good stopping off point on your way into town but be warned Bibi’s can be extremely busy with long wait times.

The Fumbally - 8 Fumbally Lane - 30 minute walk. A really unusual space with a constantly changing menu, The Fumbally is extremely hip and a great spot to people watch. You order and pay for your food up front at the till & get a lettered block to take away to your table. The wait staff will then drop your order to you. You will most likely need to share a table and the service can be slow and somewhat idiosyncratic but it’s never boring! There is also a small market that runs next door in The Fumbally Stables from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays, worth a visit for Sceal Bakery alone.

Alma -12 South Circular Road - 30 minute walk. This cafe is small but perfectly formed. Run by an Argentinian family the food brings a South American twist to the breakfast scene & is extremely instagrammable. Be warned this spot is always busy due to its size

Noshingtons - 186 South Circular Road - 20 minute walk. Just reopened and completely refurbished after a fire gutted the building, it’s a family friendly spot where you can check out the work of celebrated Irish photographer Barry McCall. They also have a smaller outpost in Harold’s Cross Park, also a 20 minute walk away

Dinner Somewhere Special

Locks - 1 Windsor Terrace, Portobello - 25 minute walk. A beautiful spot sitting right on the canal you can watch the swans go by as you enjoy the great service and brilliant food. It previously held a Michelin star but without it it under promises and overdelivers.

Leonard’s Corner, 111 South Circular Road - 25 minute walk. You couldn’t get a table for love nor money when Bastible first opened in 2015 & it’s been a cornerstone of the Dublin dining scene ever since. It’s been catapulted back into the limelight with the news that ex-Noma chef Cúán Greene is back in Dublin and their new head chef and reviews have called it "the start of something truly bloody exciting". Expect a stampede, but if you can get in the door, go for it!

Circa - 90 Terenure Rd N - 30 minute walk. This is a great new addition, a real neighbourhood restaurant situated in the neighbouring village of Terenure, It’s four young owners bring a contemporary twist to the place with a great space, warm service and innovative but tasty food & drink. It’s my new favourite spot, and you can always stop off for a drink at Green Man Wines, the artisanal wine bar at 3 Terenure Rd N on the way or as you’re heading home.

Delahunt is a contemporary Irish restaurant and bar situated in a historic Victorian building on Dublin's Camden Street. This cozy, restored space is complete with a long bar, vintage furniture & a cozy cocktail bar upstairs. The menu is small but perfectly formed with great seasonal irish ingredients in a very special setting.

Casual Dining

One of my favourite pizza spots would be Pi (73 - 83 South Great George's Street), a sitdown restaurant, regarded as the best in Dublin and a contender on the national stage. Please be aware its walk in only but there are plenty of spots to grab a drink nearby if you need to wait. Just leave your name and number, they text you when your table is ready, and you can check where you are in the queue at any time.

6 South Great George's Street - a trendy location with funky tables and tiled floor for proper Mexican food and variety of cocktails. If you like your music loud & your drinks flowing this is the spot for you. The Mexican tapas are super tasty with a number of different offers - Margarita Monday: Two Margaritas for €14, Taco Tuesday: Two Taco dishes for €6 and all dishes are €7.77 on 777 Sundays

(numerous locations, closest 36 Wexford St) is the spot to try for the best burgers, if you like them pure, simple and perfect. 12 Wexford St - is located in the heart of buzzing Wexford Street and Camden Street, Las Tapas de Lola offers award-winning Spanish tapas, wines, beers and tasty sangria for every occasion. It’s an Irish-Spanish co-production from the lovely Vanessa & Anna and has incredibly warm service that keeps everyone coming back, as well as the mouth watering tapas of course. There’s a nice terrace area out the front that is great for people watching. I would recommend you book here as everyone loves this Dublin institution.

City Centre Pubs & Bars

15 William St S - a Dublin institution with arguably the best pint of Guinness in the city. It’s a combination of an old man pub & a hipster joint and you can find half of Dublin sitting outside on a sunny day sipping their pints of plain and enjoying a classic ham and cheese toastie.

There are a cluster of pubs and bars around Fade St that are all pretty good - you can try The Market Bar for tapas with your drinks, Hogans for a big, bustling social boozer. Drury Buildings for cocktails in their courtyard out the back & L’Gueleton, the popular eatery turned late bar for good DJ sets. Or you could pop up to the secret no name bar upstairs, just go through the door with the wooden snail sign outside. You can do a mini pub crawl without going anywhere.

My favourite cocktails can be found at The Blind Pig, a Speakeasy Prohibition Bar.To make a reservation, you can email reservations@theblindpig.ie to see the Blind Pig at a particular time or by using the reservation tab. You can choose to visit for just drinks or both cocktails and dinner. You will then receive instructions on our location which is less than a five-minute walk from Trinity College in the city centre near Grafton Street. For last-minute bookings or if you wish to pop in for a quick drink, just give them a call on +353 (0)1 565 4700. They are open late on Fridays and Saturdays with live music so feel free to drop in! Please note it’s over 23s only but you can experience the forgotten thrill of secret passwords, false storefronts and just a touch of lawlessness once you keep it a secret. So shhh!

Late Bars & Night Clubs

Whelans - 25 Wexford St - famed for live music and is the indie and alternative heartland of Dublin. A traditional country pub in the heart of the city, the venue has played host to such musical legends as Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Christy Moore and Peter Buck and Mike Mills from REM and was the mecca around which my college social life revolved. There’s a variety of different spaces behind the big facade, the intimate Parlour Bar, a big smoking area in the interior courtyard and an indie disco in the back room after gigs, whose set list has remained the same as I’ve gotten older but will always make you dance. It’s been the home of many a great night out, where just the one becomes a 3am finish.

The Black Door - 58 Harcourt St - a piano lounge meets nightclub housed in a Georgian building. It tends to attract an older crowd and go later, til 4am or so. It is only open Thursday to Saturday and plays host to live music and DJs. The piano bar prides itself on being exclusive, and sometimes enforces an over-28s policy.

Tengu Izakaya is located at the rear of Yamamori Sushi on lower Ormond Quay, and with an entrance on Great Strand Street & plays host to a variety of dance nights, my favourite being the monthly Lumo Club. It’s a tasty Japanese restaurant by day, part of the Izakaya family and the bar & club open from 10pm on Fridays & Saturdays. I’m not sure I can in good conscience recommend Copper Face Jacks (29-30 Harcourt St) & it’s been years since I darkened the door of the place but it’s Dublin’s biggest nightclub, open 7 nights a week and there is always a party going on. So if you’re looking for a cheesy late night dance party with lots of shots & the chance to hook up with someone this is the place to go. It opens from 11pm but I wouldn’t recommend going until later in the night and a few drinks in!

Local Pubs & Bars

Four Provinces - Ravensdale Drive - 20 minute walk. This is a pub attached to a local microbrewery so it doesn’t get much more local than that! They sell their own tasty beer as well as a host of other craft options. Irish craft beer is really undergoing a renaissance at the moment so I would recommend sampling some on your trip but don’t worry, they have a guinness tap too! It’s open since March and operates tasting clubs, trad music sessions and even pop up Gaeltachts for those wanting to speak Irish. A real local gem.

57 The Headline - 56-57 Clanbrassil St Lower - 25 minutes. A serious craft beer pub with the best from Ireland and worldwide on their rotational taps, The Headline also houses an impressive gin & whiskey collection. There are tasting trays of whiskey and craft beers on offer which is a fun group activity and a great way to try different things. They have a more secluded gin bar located upstairs. They also do excellent bar food - from meat & cheese platters to Sunday roasts. The chicken burger is a particular favourite. Do be aware the only serve craft beer so no Guinness or Heineken but trust me, you won’t miss them.

Neighborhoods

Dun Laoghaire Dun Laoghaire is a coastal town in South Dublin. A walk of one of Dun Laoaghire’s two piers which encircle its 200 year old harbour is a classic Dublin day out, especially when topped off with a Teddy’s icecream, available from numerous kiosks or their original store. Alternatively you could sample some local fish & chips On Sundays there is a great food market in the People’s Park, a short walk from the pier, which has a wide variety of international cuisines on offer as well as fresh produce. Be warned it does get very busy! There is also a sit down cafe in the park which is located in a lovely pavilion and is open every day. You can also go for a swim in Dublin’s historic Forty Foot bathing area or visit the James Joyce Museum which is located right beside it in one on Dublin’s martello towers, go sailing athte Irish National Sailing School located in the harbour, or rent a bike. Dun Laoghaire in one of my favourite spots in Dublin. You can get to Dun Laoghaire by bus or by train, however there is not a direct connection from Crumlin. The DART journey offers spectacular views of Dublin Bay so if preferable in my opinion. The DART runs every 5 minutes during rush hour periods and every 20 mins during the day. The closest station to the house is Grand Canal Dock or alternatively you could get the bus into town and the DART out along the coast. Dublin Bay Cruises also offer a ferry from the city centre out to Dun Laoghaire. If you are interested in doing some sea swimming, my other favourite sports are Seapoint (you’ll need to check the tides for this spot and go during the few hours either side of high tide) and my all time number one, Hawk Cliff, off Vico Road in Dalkey.

Howth Another popular day trip would be out to Howth, also on the DART line to the north, and can also be reached from the city centre with Dublin Bay Cruises. There are a number of watersports available including stand up paddleboarding, diving and a boat trip out to the island of Ireland’s Eycliff. The cliff walking routes that are very popular as well. It’s a great sport for wildlife and you can visit The Baily Lighthouse – the last of Ireland’s lighthouses to become automated en route. Howth is particularly known for its many fine pubs and restaurants, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. My recommendations would be a hard earned pint at The Summit Pub after a bracing cliff walk. And descending down to the Brass Monkey down at the harbour or Aqua with spectacular views for a good meal.
