"Menai Bridge" as a town gets it's name from the suspension bridge buildin in 1826 to connect Anglesey with the mainland. It is now a thriving village, and home to many good pubs and restaurants as well as a scenic waterfront walk. It is possible to walk to Menai Bridge in 20-30 minutes from Tremlyn over the bridge itself. Very much recommended if weather conditions are good. From Tremlyn head uphill using Belmont road.

King Edwards I's finest castle can be found in Caernarfon, a 15 minute drive to the West from Tremlyn. The bus stop at the top of our little hill also has regular direct buses there. It is a bustling tourist town with many pubs and eateries. You can walk around the outside of the castle for free or pay to enter for a tour.

The walled town of Conwy is another of King Edward I's creations dating back to 1283. A 20 minute drive on the A55 West, or also easily accessible by train, although you may have to ask the driver or guard to stop at this small station. A thriving pub and food scene and a beautiful place for a day out. Also, from Conwy, you can easily walk the 15 minutes across the river to the multiscreen Cinema, if that's your thing.

This is Bangor's most studenty area. As a result, it's the place for cheap and cheerful pubs and food, and a decent welcome, especially in term time. There's a mini pub crawl to be done, starting at Patrick's Bar, then taking in the Globe, Belle Vue and Rascals. There's also a supermarket here (Morrisons). 20 minute walk from Tremlyn. Instead of walking down the hill towards the station, fork left and take the flat road towards upper Bangor.

The pier in Bangor doesn't have fair ground rides, stalls and bars like some other piers, but it will be hard to find a pier in the UK with better views of the coastline and mountains. There are a handful of small souvenir shops, and couple of decent cafes. Pay the 50p donation to enter (parking extra).

Sightseeing

If you have a car and want to venture a little further afield, Llanddwyn Island, accessed from the wonderful sweeping Newborough beach is one of the most beautiful spots in North Wales. It is about a 30 minute drive from Tremlyn and once paid and parked up, another 30 minute walk along the beach to the island. Be sure to check the tide though - it's easy to forget that it's an island and get cut off by the high tide!

This folly, on the outskirts of Bangor is now kept by the National Trust. An interesting building and fascinating history, although controversial in its nature due to the wealth that led to its creation being accumulated through the slave trade. Easily accessed by car, or 45 minutes on foot from Tremlyn.

For real ales and a warm welcome, try Patrick's Bar in Upper Bangor. Make it a pub crawl by taking in the nearby Globe and Belle Vue too.

Currently the best tandoori restaurant in town, this place has a decent selection, especially on the Chef's Special menu. No alcohol sold, but you're welcome to use the convenience store just up the road and bring it at no charge. Royal Tandoori is closer to the house, and is ok too.

If you're after a take-away pizza, it is well worth swerving Domino's and trying the legendary deep pan pizzas available at this Upper Bangor shop. Next door to Patrick's Bar - why not pop in there for a pint while your pizza is cooking! If ordering a delivery, say that the house "is called Tremlyn, it's on a side street called St David's drive, just behind 21 Penrhos Road".

National pub chain J D Wetherspoon - home of cheap drinks and cheap microwave food. You know what you're going to get, so if it's a bargain you're after, 'Spoons' is your place. Also one of the few places in central Bangor with a generous sized beer garden.

This authentic Schezuan Chinese restaurant primarily caters for the ex-pat Chinese student community so it is recommended for those more adventurous travellers who want to try authentic Chinese food. The atmosphere is more like a cafe, decor pretty shabby, the menus are mainly in Mandarin with some cryptic English translations (they will help you order) and the food will arrive, dish by dish, whenever it is ready! The payoff is authentic Chinese cooking a step up from standard UK Chinese restaurants. For a more typical British take on Chinese food, I recommend the Garden Cantonese Restaurant.

Recently renovated by the Greene King chain, this place does decent food, but is particularly recommended for its beer garden and outdoor dining on a nice day - with views over the Straits. Nearby Anglesey Arms is a decent alternative (good beer garden but no views), and there's also a good welcome at the Liverpool Arms (good food).
