Neighborhoods

London is made up of a series of ‘villages’ each with its own different character and feel. Maida Vale is an affluent residential district just west of the centre and is a pretty, quiet and safe neighbourhood. The area is mostly residential, with many large late Victorian and Edwardian blocks of mansion flats and is within the City of Westminster. Maida Vale gets its name from a battle in 1806 where Sir John Stuart's men defeated Napoleon Bonaparte’s army at the town of Maida in Italy. There are three main areas, one around the tube in Elgin Avenue, that has two restaurants, Starbucks and Gail's coffee shops, a pub, two chemists, a hairdresser, two banks and shops selling a range of ethnic foods, vegetables and fruits. The second area is a short walk away in Clifton Road, where you will find three excellent cafés, a Tesco supermarket, chemist, beautician and two upmarket delicatessens. The third is known as Little Venice a very picturesque section of connecting waterways and canals with pretty houseboats. The Canal Café Theatre and restaurant is close to the bridge and in season there are many public hire narrow boats to travel up and down the canals. There is also another Tesco supermarket in Hall Road and across the road a charming small independent Everyman cinema. There is a large park, the Paddington Recreation Ground, that has a gym. You don’t have to go far to find interesting places to visit in London, particularly if you have been here before and want to explore lesser known London. All the places of interest listed below are walking distance away: • Abbey Road Studios: These are recording studios made famous by the Beatles • Lord’s Cricket Ground: one of two major cricket venues in London and home of the MCC. • Regent’s Park: Stunning royal park with boating on the lake in the summer • BBC recording studios: check out the BBC website for their programme of events • Portobello Road: Great and diverse market (see shopping below) • Regents and Grand Union Canals: Stunning walks along the canals in good weather
