If possible, try to take the stadium tour. Only offered on the last Friday of every month, it's hard to schedule without taking the day off. The tour covers just about everywhere you'd want to visit - the old visitor locker room, current visitor and home locker rooms, south press box, loge seating in the pavilion, and the field. The 90-minute tour ran long and took 110 minutes.

The Getty Center is one of the most impressive architectural achievements in the United States — and it also contains some of the finest works of art in the world. The circular concrete-and-steel structure was designed by renowned architect Richard Meier, and it houses an abundance of art from various ages and nations. Here you'll find Renaissance paintings, 20th century American photography, baroque sculptures, Byzantine illuminated manuscripts, and more, all housed inside a sprawling, modern campus amid the Santa Monica Mountains. The museum also offers spectacular views of Los Angeles on clear days. http://www.getty.edu/

http://santamonicapier.org/ Just west of downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica contains one of the most legendary beach scenes in the United States. Santa Monica also boasts an abundance of great restaurants and excellent nightlife spots. The 3 miles of shoreline are renowned as some of the best in the area thanks to the soft sands, ideal weather and bevy of attractions. "State Beach," as its known, averages about 340 days of sunshine a year and acted as the backdrop for the popular television series, "Baywatch." Santa Monica is a very walkable part of town, and many recent visitors suggest you explore the area by bicycle. If you're feeling extra adventurous, Santa Monica's bike path travels a full 22 miles to Torrance, California, making it the longest beach bike path in the world. But the beach's most unique aspect is, of course, its famous pier, which features the coastal thrill rides of Pacific Park and lively street performances. Some travelers bemoan the price tag on some of the pier's food and attractions, but with free entry, your losses will probably be mitigated. Parking is plentiful and costs between $6 and $15, depending on the season and lot location. For more information, check out the Santa Monica Pier's website.

venicebeach.com Developed in the early 20th century, Venice Beach is modeled — canals and all — after its namesake city in Italy. Admittedly, the experiment didn't live up to its Italian inspiration, but the neighborhood has become distinctly Californian, embodying the spirit of the wealthy, the alternative and the just plain bizarre. Rather than towering churches and intimate pizzerias, you'll find canalside mansions near funky boutiques and restaurants. Venice Beach's claim to fame is its boardwalk. Hosting a daily procession of eclectic characters and scantily clad beachgoers, the boardwalk never fails to impress out-of-towners. As far as the beach goes, the water is generally OK for swimming, but sunbathing is the activity of choice here. Depending on your expectations, Venice Beach will either entertain or appall. Some call the beach too "touristy" and the restaurant options "minimal." But others rave about the neighborhood's quirky feel, bustling beach and the unique food options along Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Venice Beach is approximately 20 miles west of central L.A. Street parking and parking lots are available around the neighborhood, though finding a spot can be a hassle at certain times of the day; read all street signs carefully to avoid a ticket or towing. For more information, check out the neighborhood's website.

Greystone is one of the largest mansions in Beverly Hills and an important landmark for American cinema. Originally built by oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny in 1927 as a gift to his son, Ned, Greystone now represents a golden age in American cinema. Many films, including "The Bodyguard," and television shows, including "Revenge" and "Gilmore Girls," have been shot on these gothic-inspired grounds. Today, the interior of the mansion is closed, but visitors are free to walk around the property. Many recent visitors call Greystone a "hidden gem" within L.A., saying that it offers respite from the city's hustle and bustle. Travelers describe the park grounds as spectacular, with expertly manicured lawns, a variety of flowers, artful fountains and even a koi pond. The grounds are open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours in the summer. There is no admission fee, and free on-site parking is available. For more information, visit the Greystone Mansion and Park website.

The Third Street Promenade, popular with shopaholics, has an eclectic vibe similar to its Santa Monica locale. This open-air shopping mall is filled with major chain stores like REI and Banana Republic, as well as more unique shops like the Thunderbolt Spiritual Books shop. You'll also find that outdoor dining options — many of which use local ingredients — are plentiful. And if you're in the mood to cook your own meal, you can find fresh produce at the farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday morning, from 8:30 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Despite all the tempting spending options, the promenade's atmosphere is the main draw for many recent travelers. Unexpected extras like the sculptured shrubs and talented street performers are particularly popular with visitors. The pedestrian-friendly layout reminded some recent visitors of shopping in Europe, though others were turned off by the name brands you can find in most American malls. Whether your visit is for shopping, entertainment, dining or just sightseeing, it's a good idea to set aside a large chunk of time to visit the Promenade. Open daily, the promenade is located a few blocks from the Santa Monica Pier. There is plenty of parking but finding a spot can get competitive at peak hours. If you leave the car at home, you can always take a Big Blue Bus from downtown Los Angeles. Check out the promenade's website for more information. Bigbluebus.com - rapid 10 from downtown.

Most Angelenos think of Tommy’s when they hear “chili burger,” and there’s definitely a reason for that: Tommy’s has been absolutely slaying the chili burger game since 1946. The original location is still open, too, so head over to Rampart and Beverly and peep it for yourself. And by peep it we mean stick your face into a vat of chili. Maybe wash it down with some burgers. Your call.

One of Hollywood's most iconic and memorable sites, the TCL Chinese Theatre (originally Grauman's Chinese Theatre) opened in 1927 and represents the excess of Hollywood's Golden Age when lavishly-designed theaters were the movie-going standard. You can tour the theater for $13.50 (kids tour tickets cost $6.50 and senior tickets cost $11.50). Tours of the theater are offered seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and because of this attraction's popularity, it's best to reserve your spot in advance. On the tour, you'll learn the history of the theater as well as some fun facts about Hollywood premieres held here in the past (including "Star Wars" in 1977). Overall, travelers say the tour guides' passion on the subject is evident, making this experience special. For more information or to make reservations online, visit the TCL Chinese Theatre website. While you're here, take a stroll along the free-to-enjoy Hollywood Walk of Fame, where hundreds of movie stars have left their handprints and signatures along the sidewalk. The most activity and notable names are located between the 6800 and 6900 block of Hollywood Boulevard (which, luckily, is directly in front of the theater). As one of the most famous and recognized sites in all of Hollywood, the theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame are really a must-see. But it seems like a lot of people have the same idea — recent visitors say the sidewalk gets packed with camera-wielding tourists photographing the ground. But for some, the hustle and bustle was part of the quirky allure of the area. To learn more about the stars and their stars, visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame website.

For an authentic Hollywood experience, set aside some time to tour the grounds. On the studio tour, a guide will take you around the site's 65 acres in a golf cart and you'll also be able to hop off and explore sound stages and recognizable studio sets from many current TV shows and movies. Recent visitors praise the friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, who ask visitors about their favorite television shows and films and point out specific areas of interest for each group. A trip to Paramount Studios would pair well with a visit to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as the attraction is located in Hollywood just south of the cemetery. To visit the studio, you must reserve a spot in advance for a guided tour, which lasts about two hours and costs $53 per person. Tours are given daily every half hour from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, check out Paramount Pictures website. http://www.paramountstudiotour.com/

Immortalized by Julia Robert's Pretty Woman shopping spree, Rodeo Drive is an upscale shopping street in Beverly Hills that features designer label stores and small private boutiques. The area is popular with wealthy shoppers, sunglass-wearing celebrities, and tourists hoping to see fashion icons. If you venture to Rodeo Drive, don't forget to look at the road itself: You'll spot some impressive and pricey vehicles. Don't be afraid to browse. Most shop owners are used to sightseers walking the area with little intent to purchase anything. That said, some stores require appointments for entry, and those are generally off limits to tourists. The shops and nearby eateries maintain varying hours of operation and are usually open every day. For more information and a store directory, check out the official Rodeo Drive website. http://www.rodeodrive-bh.com/

Entertainment & Activities

If your kids go crazy for dinosaurs — and really, what kid doesn't? — then a visit to La Brea Tar Pits is sure to be the highlight of their trip. Although the pits look like the set of a cheesy PG movie, hot tar has been bubbling from the earth at this spot along Museum Row (just east of Beverly Hills) for about 40,000 years. And from the gooiest part of L.A., about 100 tons of Ice Age fossils, representing between 400 and 600 different species, have been discovered. The adjoining Page Museum houses many of the artifacts that were found at the tar pits; consequently, it is home to one of the largest collections of Ice Age fossils in the world. You can check out the tar pits completely free of charge, but the Page Museum costs $12 for adults; reduced entry fees are available for children, students, seniors and members of the military. Most recent visitors agree that the exhibits are well worth the cost of admission. The museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Budding paleontologists should note that you can volunteer to help out on an excavation or in the facility's laboratory (for free) when you visit. Participants will help paleontologists dig, sort and measure bones, and record data. You should be prepared for the strong stench of asphalt that hangs in the air. Parking is available for a flat fee of $9 at the museum's lot on the corner of South Curson Avenue and West Sixth Street.
