Magellan’s Cross holds a very big part of the history of Cebu. It is believed to be a Christian cross planted by the Portuguese and Spanish explorers headed by Ferdinand Magellan. It was planted upon their arrival in Cebu on March 15, 1521. That day also marked the birth of Christianity in the land.  The original cross was believed by the people of old to have miraculous healing powers so they started chipping it away. Because of that, the government officials was prompted to supposedly encased it in another wooden cross made from tindalo. It is now housed in a small chapel. Rumors say though that the original cross was destroyed or disappeared after the death of Magellan.  Today, the cross is housed in an octagonal pavilion called the “kiosk”.  It is one of the main attractions for tourists because it is a part of country’s history.

Food Scene

The Lantaw Restaurant chain in Cebu has quickly gown to be one of the most popular restaurants in Cebu. It has branches in Cordova (Mactan Island), in Busay and the SRP. Lantaw offers affordable local cuisine with some of its more popular dishes being Crispy Pata, Spicy Scallops, Grilled Pork Belly and Cordova Express. While you eat enjoy some of the wonderful views of Cebu City. The restaurants offer some of the best views in town.  I had a beautiful sunset one of the times I ate at their floating restaurant in Cordova. While the Busay branch had some amazing views of Cebu City at night (see video). Of the two I found the Lantaw Floating Restaurant (on Mactan Island) a bit out of the way and hard to get to. Either you will need to organise a taxi to wait for you (for an extra fee) or catch one the tricycles to take you back to the main road to try and hail down a taxi. The place gets busy and if you don’t make a reservation it could be a bit of wait. I had to wait 40 minutes for a table on one visit. The restaurant in Busay isn’t nearly as bad to get to as it is closer to Cebu City. I actually liked this branch more and the food tended to be better here. There is also a branch at the SRP which I have not tried as yet. For me Lantaw Restaurant is a good place to eat at. If you want to try some local cuisine in Cebu at good prices this is certainly a great place to start. More for the casual laid back person wishing to eat with family or friends. If you wanted to eat somewhere romantic in Cebu  I wouldn’t really say this is the place to go, not if you want somewhere quiet anyhow. Overall a good restaurant to eat in Cebu without having to spend too much.

Sight-seeing

In 1521, the Spaniards, led by Ferdinand Magellan, arrived in the Philippines for a quest of exploration and gaining more colonies. They first landed in the island of Leyte where they had received a warm welcome from local Filipino leaders there. They then later decided to try befriending the other Filipino leaders in other islands to make it easier for them to conquer the country. However, though most of the Filipino leaders were kind to them and accepted their friendship, not all submitted to their blueprint. Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain of Mactan hesitated to welcome the guests. He, being a great leader, perceived the hidden intent of Magellan and his company. He defended his land that led to the famous battle of Mactan in April 27, 1521. During the battle, Spanish soldiers were defeated and Ferdinand Magellan was killed by Lapu-Lapu. Because of Lapu-Lapu’s heroic act to defend his land, a 20-meter bronze statue was erected on the very spot where the battle took place.   Right now, the statue of Lapu-Lapu is located in an enclosed park at Punta Engaño in the island of Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City. This landmark is being preserved for historical conservation. The statue as well as the rest of the park that encloses it is called the “Lapu-Lapu or Mactan Shrine”. The monument of Lapu-Lapu in this shrine is believed to be 100 years old from its creation. This site has ever since become a tourist attraction.
