Food!!

the places I love
Located in a sweet square in Trastevere, almost set by a beautiful tree, it is an excellent example of a traditional Roman hosteria which, despite having almost become a "pilgrimage" destination, retains its authenticity based on a few elements: excellent food, fair prices and the genuine Roman hospitality. As with any popular spot, get there early or be prepared to wait.

Not only the closest option you can find (I would say 20 steps from the Suite) but also an excellent Roman osteria where you can taste all the pillars of the city's cuisine. And don't worry about one glass of wine too many: your bed is a stone's throw away!

Another excellent Roman trattoria, one of the best in Trastevere actually, a five-minute walk from your Suite. Perhaps the Rock Star here is the pasta (tonnarelli please) cacio e pepe served on a parmesan wafer....remarkable! Reservation almost essential

Do you feel guilty because you are eating too much pasta and pizza? This is all you need. An historic place, and one of the locations of a popular restaurant franchise famous for its huge variety of salads prepared with the most varied ingredients you can imagine, perhaps accompanied by a hot focaccia with rosemary and a nice glass of chilled white wine... Well, it may happen in the end that vegetables themselves will be a "supporting character" but your conscience will be at peace anyway!

Maybe for someone a bit of a "tourist" experience but still a nice one. This Roman Osteria adds to everything you would expect, even the scenographic aspect, given that it takes up the typical Roman tavern of the 19th century. Waiters dressed in period costumes and musicians singing popular Roman songs among the tables will take you on a dive into the Rome of the Popes. In the warm season it is wonderful to dine outdoors at the foot of a building entirely covered with climbing ivy. Quaint

I don't know if there are more churches or pizzerias in Rome (it's a good fight) just as there are so many different types of pizza. In this case we are talking about the classic Neapolitan pizza, that is the one with a pronounced and fragrant edge and the Forno della Soffitta is always a guarantee! My favourite? Pizza Amatriciana, but be sure the others aren't far behind either!!!

Another nearby tavern that combines excellent Roman cuisine (carbonara to be mentioned) with Maritozzo, a typical Roman baked product, typically eaten with whipped cream but here reinvented in other ways and preparations

For an Italian, the word "Pizza" does not have a single meaning. And Rome is no exception and has its own traditional version of pizza on the plate called Roman Pizza. Unlike the Neapolitan one, the Roman pizza is very large but very thin and crunchy. This Pizzeria is 10 minutes from the Suite and is a sort of temple of Roman pizza, served on long marble tables, to be preceded by the typical Roman fried foods: courgette flower with mozzarella, fried rice balls, and for strong hearts, filet of fried cod. Good luck :-D

And here we come to the third and last (you're safe now...) of the types of "Pizza" that you will want to taste in Rome. It is the pan pizza. This, too, is an old traditional recipe, and instead of sitting in a restaurant, you eat it with and hands and on the street! You will find plenty of these kinds of pizzerias around, you will recognize them by the counter full of black rectangular pans with super crunchy pizza inside topped with anything... If you are in the vicinity of St. Peter's it will then be necessary for you to pass by this place, owned by a chef who has become famous not only for becoming a TV star but also for a pizza that is nothing short of heavenly. Even the price flys high but, you know what? Maybe you get less, but it absolutely deserves it!

it is said that sweet comes at the end and so if you are not yet full, you can dive into this other typical (not too healthy indeed) Roman tradition: late night sweet pastry! Actually, many of these places are open during the day as well, but the tradition stems from the fact that young Romans, at the end of their good nights out clubbing, would stop to buy croissants, dognuts and maritozzi from the pastry workshops that were already working to supply Bars for breakfast the next day. Whether it is late at night or any other time of day, this place is worth a visit, not least because it is named after the world-famous Maritozzo with whipped cream. Words struggle to describe it...try it for yourself. I often stop here before going home but I save the Maritozzo for breakfast the next day....clever option ;-)

One stop you will love if you love simple and genuine food is the Testaccio Market. Located near the former Slaughterhouse of Rome, it is a market where, next to the classic fruit and vegetable stalls, you can also find many restaurant stalls where you can taste many specialities. If you are curious and hungry, you can even take a little tour and taste a little of everything! Worth mentioning is a fishmonger's/restaurant where you can eat dishes of fish taken straight from the stall! Normally only open for lunch, on Saturdays and Sundays and also open until 11 p.m.! And if you want to take a stroll afterwards, the adjacent former slaughterhouse is an interesting space to visit, between areas used for exhibitions and cultural events and areas that are still abandoned and somewhat gloomy, but ultimately fascinating! Last but not least Testaccio district is also a great place for nightlife lovers as it is full of Clubs!

A place that really deserves a visit, and in fact it is very difficult to find a table, especially during the weekend. But if you are lucky you will treat yourself to a top culinary experience. The prices are a little above average, but the quality of the ingredients and the care taken in the preparation more than justify it. It should be noted that not far away the same Family runs a historic bakery full of every good thing you could immagine....

the Jewish quarter, just on the other side of the Tiber river, is a must-see. Apart from the historical aspect, here you will find some of the best restaurants offering Jewish Roman cuisine. This is one of the most historic places but you will find that there are many more. In any case, if you love artichokes, don't miss the spectacular Carciofo alla Giudia! A mighty Roman artichoke fried twice with such skill that it becomes a crispy and tasty rose... beyond words. Also part of the district is the archaeological complex of the Portico d'Ottavia, an area where you can literally walk among some beautifully preserved Roman archaeological sites.

Drink Public fresh water!

Rome's public drinking water is recognized as one of the best in Italy, scrupulously controlled and available everywhere in the City. In fact, Rome is also famous for its public drinking fountains, the so-called 'Nasoni'. Their characteristic shape, together with their widespread distribution in the city, have made these fountains one of the symbols of the Capital, and you may find that you won’t need to spend money to buy bottled water to carry around and dispose of!!
