Food scene

The Oracle is a riverside complex containing shops, restaurants and bars and a multiscreen cinema. There is a good range of places to eat and drink on both sides of the river, mostly well-known chains. For something a little different try Mission Burrito for fast food or London Street Brasserie for fine dining with a relaxed ambience.

A Reading institution, Sweeney and Todd's pie shop is appropriately located next to a barber shop. Its décor may have seen better days, but it serves a fantastic range of pies (albeit more suited to carnivores - vegans best eat elsewhere). Good, simple fare at affordable prices - pies are also available to take away.

Neighbourhoods

Just to the north across the River Thames from the town centre, Caversham has its own atmosphere and a slower pace than Reading. If you're looking for independent places to eat, drink and shop you will find plenty here, including a vegan café, Cypriot, Georgian, Spanish and Persian restaurants, home décor stores and boutiques. The best way to get there on foot is across the walking and cycle bridge just behind the station.

The Thames flows just to the north of Reading, meeting the River Kennet just to the east of the town centre. It's possible to walk along the Thames Path in either direction from the town and there are pubs along the way to break up your journey. In particular the walk to Sonning is pleasant and you can stop for a drink or a meal at The Bull or Coppa Club where you might even bump into George and Amal Clooney. You can also hire boats from Caversham Boat Services http://www.cavershamboatservices.co.uk/ or take a passenger service from Thames River Cruises https://www.thamesrivercruise.co.uk/

Travelling by bus

Reading has a good bus service and the prices are pretty reasonable but if you pay cash for your fare no change is given. You can pay by contactless debit or credit card. Most routes announce the approaching stop, and you should ring the bell to let the driver know you want to get off. The Reading Buses app is free and provides information on routes, fares and timetables, plus real-time tracking of buses. Normal adult fare is £2, but a reduced rate of £1.30 applies to some shorter journeys; there are also return tickets and group fares which can save you money.

Easy days out by rail

Reading is well connected by rail, here are some suggestions: London - Reading is just 25 minutes from Paddington and an off-peak travelcard, including unlimited tube and bus travel in London, is only £25.40 for adults - your outbound train must not arrive in London before 10am for this fare, and your return options are limited until 7.30pm. Oxford - 25 minutes away and costing just £10.10 return, Oxford offers fabulous museums and interesting architecture, including the famous colleges and libraries. Don't miss the covered market for independent shops and casual dining; there are river and canal walks too. Windsor: the journey takes 30-45 minutes and you have to change at Maidenhead.

Historic County Town

Reading is the largest town in the UK and has an illustrious history which it tends to keep to itself. Did you know that parliament relocated here during the Black Death? That the first ever song to be written down was composed here? Or that it's the reputed burial place of Henry I? These days it's a multi-cultural community where more languages are spoken than in any other town in the UK. It's an important tech hub, housing the European HQ of Microsoft and Oracle among others. There's a thriving community arts scene, with its own annual Fringe Festival, as well as the world famous Reading Festival. It's a vibrant and inclusive place which provides a warm, if slightly self-effacing welcome.
