Best place for fresh fish and seafood at Playa Coson. It is a very rustic place where you have your feet in the sand, just next to the ocean. The Piña Colada is a must! Bring enough cash, they DO NOT take credit cards.

Parks & Nature

If you prefer not to do organized excursions, the Limon Waterfalls can be done by yourself. Here some tips: Google El Limon before you leave the house. It’s only 30 minutes away in direction of Santa Barbara de Samaná (main town of the Peninsula of Samaná). Once you cross the village of El Limon, Spanish-owned Santí, at the main intersection in El Limón, is a good choice but also the most expensive. The lunch is excellent and the guides and staff all adults. Typically the tour (horse, guide and lunch) costs per person from US$35 to US$50. You can also try “Parada La Manzana” or “Franklin”, just drive another 5km east of El Limón toward Samaná, which has the added advantage – depending on your perspective – of being much closer to the falls and having a shorter horseback ride. They will charge around USD 7 for the horseback ride only and USD 14 including lunch. When you get to these “Paradas”, order the lunch before going to the waterfall. They know how long you take to come back and will have the meal ready for you. We normally do it this way. A little tip for the guides is welcome.

At the Dominican Treehouse you can make the best Zipline in Samana. You can do it by yourself or with an organized excursion. Here some tips if you decide to do it by yourself. This excursion is for almost any age; you just have to like adventure. You do not need to be a sport pro, only a little bit brave. We did it many times already with children starting from 4 years old. Children can do the zip line together with an adult if they prefer. If you do this excursion without a guided tour, you should have a Jeep and not a normal car. There are two Zip lines in Samaná, one just before getting to the town of Samaná and the other one after Samaná. The good one is the second one! The price is 60 USD per adult and 45 USD per child. You have to pay cash in Pesos or Dollars. Once you get to Santa Barbara de Samaná (45 minutes drive from Playa Bonita) it will take you about 15 more minutes to get to the Zip line. Follow the direction to Las Galeras. You will pass the Samaná Bay and Harbor and then the road goes up the hill. At the next intersection turn right and just after that you will see a sign turning left to Samaná Zip line. From this point on the road gets a bit bumpy. Just drive straight, you can’t miss the Zip line. You do not have to book in advance. After the Zip line you can have lunch on the beach at Playa del Valle (beautiful beach, just another 10 minutes drive). There are two or three places to eat, very typical Dominican. Josefina’s restaurant is the one we like most. You can preorder your lunch the evening before (from 6pm, before she is on the beach and has no cell phone connection). If you do not preorder, it’s no problem; you just might have to wait a bit longer while having some Piña Coladas (don’t miss them). Cell phone Josefina: +1 (829) 632 1534. At the Zip line they can show you how to get to the Playa del Valle. You can’t get lost. Make sure you leave Playa del Valle early enough to get back to Las Terrenes before nightfall. Here again, you can stop at “Balconcito” or any other beach bar in Las Terrenas for a drink.

You can have a wonderful beach walk from Playa Bonita to Playa Coson. Leaving the garden walking left, 30-60 minutes walk, depending where you go. If the waves are too strong at Playa Bonita (does not happen very often), Coson is perfect for surfing. On the way to Coson, you pass Punta Bonita (10-15 minutes walk). It's the place where Playa Bonita ends and Playa Coson starts. You can see both beaches from this point and have a nice swim in the ocean, which is normally very calm in this area.

Entertainment & Activities

For kite surfing you have to leave Playa Bonita and go to Punta Popi (at the exit of Las Terrenas in direction of El Limon). There are no waves and often good wind. Vincent from Kite World, is a reliable French guy. If you are a kite surfer already, you can just rent the equipment.
