Most of our guests arrive on Schiphol Airport, the biggest Airport of the Netherlands. The distance to our Airbnb is about 55 km. The best way to travel, is to rent a car at Schiphol. Public transport in the Netherlands is good in itself, but very expensive and often there are many transfer moments that cause a lot of delay. The Eurostat statistical office has calculated that Dutch public transport is the most expensive in Europe (2019) For the money from a return ticket Maastricht (south) - Groningen (north) you can easily take the plane to Eastern Europe and back. In fact: it is even cheaper. The Netherlands leads the ranking of all 28 EU countries! If you travel with a group of people, it is advisable to rent a car (at Schiphol). Faster and cheaper! We can give you tips about P&R in the different cities. The Netherlands is a small country and all cities and attractions can be reached by car in a day.

Kade 10 is one of our favourite restaurants. It is a treat to have lunch or dinner. The menu is always surprising and the daily menus with "espresso soup" are delicious. A lovely place for a romantic dinner, but also a great place to hang out and have fun with friends. The restaurant is housed in a former chocolate factory. The buildings of the old chocolate factory are located by the water, over which raw materials were brought in the old days to make the most delicious chocolate bars and chocolates. The factory complex dates from the early nineteenth century and is known in Nijkerk and surroundings as "the chocolate factory". Long time, the building was nominated for demolition. Fortunately, this beautiful piece of industrial heritage could be preserved. Restoration work began in 1994. Brasserie Kade 10 has been at this location since 2008.

Madurodam is a Dutch miniature city in The Hague on a scale of 1 in 25. The miniature city has mostly inspired the construction of various theme parks worldwide such as Legoland (Billund) and the Disneyland Park (Anaheim). It is named after George Maduro a Curaçao student who distinguished himself as a cavalry officer in the battle of The Hague during German attack on the Netherlands in 1940 and died in Dachau concentration camp in February 1945; his parents donated the initial capital for the project, which the Maduro family considers a monument to their only son. Madurodam depicts a Dutch city and society through more than 700 models of buildings from all parts of the Netherlands. There are interactive parts where visitors themselves can contribute, such as the closing of the Oosterscheldekering or the loading of containers in the Rotterdam port. Some parts contain auditory informative explanations about the items on display. Each visitor receives a special pass at the entrance with which these explanations can be activated.

City Trips

Amersfoort. Distance: 27 km A very well-preserved medieval city, still protected by monolithic gates. Thanks to the many monuments, streets, canals and subtle details you can feel the medieval city that originated in the 13th century. The Muurhuizen, built into the 13th-century city walls, are one of the most fascinating sights of the city. When the city began to expand in 1380 due to the economic boom, a new city wall had to be built. The old wall was demolished and from about 1500 onwards houses were built with the material of the old wall along the line where the city wall stood. Because the construction of these houses has taken place in different periods, a great diversity of forms has emerged. The center of Amersfoort is one of the best preserved medieval city centers in the Netherlands and has more than 300 national monuments. Via the old inner streets you will reach De Hof. This is the nicest square in the center of Amersfoort. You will find terraces and restaurants everywhere on this square.

Utrecht. Distance: 43 km. Utrecht is the most centrally located of the four largest Dutch cities. It was one of the first cities in present-day Netherlands with city rights, namely since 1122. The street plan of today's Utrecht city center originated in the Middle Ages. There are also many medieval houses here, although in later times the majority of them have been changed in layout and / or appearance. Yet many monumental buildings have been well preserved. This applies in particular to eight medieval churches, of which the Dom is the largest and best-known. The more than 112 meters high Dom Tower, from which Utrecht derives its nickname Dom City, is the highest church tower in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the low-lying yards along the water of the Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht are special. The city of Utrecht has a long and turbulent history in some periods. This goes back to Roman times at the beginning of our era, when the Roman armies built their castellum. In the seventh century, a church was built on the site of the castellum. In the following centuries, larger churches arose here. From there, large parts of the current Netherlands were Christianized. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Utrecht, situated on the River Rhine, was one of the most important trading cities in Europe. With the rise of the county of Holland, this trade moved there and Utrecht became less important, although Utrecht remained the largest city in the Netherlands until the beginning of the 16th century. After that, Utrecht gradually dropped to fourth place in the ranking of largest Dutch cities. In the year 1808, Utrecht was the capital of the Kingdom of Holland for a short period. From the 20th century, Utrecht experienced a new period of prosperity, now mainly due to its central location in the Netherlands.

The Anne Frank House is a writer's house and biographical museum dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank. The building is located on a canal called the Prinsengracht, close to the Westerkerk, in central Amsterdam in the Netherlands. During World War II, Anne Frank hid from Nazi persecution with her family and four other people in hidden rooms at the rear of the 17th-century canal house, known as the Secret Annex (Dutch: Achterhuis). She did not survive the war but her wartime diary was published in 1947. Ten years later the Anne Frank Foundation was established to protect the property from developers who wanted to demolish the block. The museum opened on 3 May 1960. It preserves the hiding place, has a permanent exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank, and has an exhibition space about all forms of persecution and discrimination. In 2013 and 2014, the museum had 1.2 million visitors and was the 3rd most visited museum in the Netherlands, after the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.

Zeewolde. Distance: 16 km. The Hulkestein Forest is a nature reserve of approximately 1000 hectares in the Dutch municipality of Zeewolde. The Hulkestein Forest is a young forest area, created after the reclamation of Flevoland. The soil consists of clay, sand and peat. After the reclamation, the course of the former river Laak became visible. The original course of this river was restored and now, as Laakse Slenk, ensures the supply of water to the Hulkesteinse Bos. During the excavation work, the remains of a cog from the Middle Ages and the remains of prehistoric settlement were found on this site. A swampy forest is developed by watering the area.

Entrance Almere. Distance: 28 km. The Oostvaardersplassen, a large swamp area with reed plains, rugged grasslands, ponds, surrounded by forests: a true bird paradise of international value. These are the Oostvaardersplassen, part of the New Land National Park. More than 50 years ago, nature in southern Flevoland created this vast swamp area. Geese, spoonbills and cormorants quickly found the Oostvaardersplassen, just like deer, foxes, hares, bats and butterflies. And since 2006 even the bald eagle is nesting there. In this bird-rich swamp area, people and nature work together in a special way. You will encounter heck cattle, konik horses and red deer along the way. With their grazing they keep the grasslands open in a natural way. And they in turn ask for care and management. Discover this bird-rich swamp area and experience how each season has its own dynamics and surprising developments. Go on a safari with a forest ranger, get on your bike or download ‘The New Wilderness iTour’ on your smartphone and get going.

You can take a well deserved rest when you reach the welcoming bar in the De Oostvaarders nature experience centre on the Almere side, or alternatively rest your legs in the Buitencentrum in Lelystad. Both visitors centres provide binoculars for spotting the animals in the reserve.

The Hoge Veluwe traditionally owes its fauna fame to its relatively large mammals, especially red deer, wild boar, roe deer and mouflon. However, the park is also home to special bird species and insects. Although the park has (limited) access for cars and public transport, cycling is the preferred means of transport. Remarkably, at several places in the park there are depots for so-called white bicycles. These bicycles can be used free of charge, but cannot be locked and are not allowed to leave the park. In addition, there are many footpaths, which people are not allowed to deviate from since 1 January 2016. About a third of the park is not open to the public, to allow wildlife and other animals to rest. Those areas do have wildlife observation posts. Besides the museums, there are all kinds of facilities and activities in the park, such as wildlife safaris and children's scavenger hunts. A coach parking area near the Visitor Centre and Park Restaurant and a large children's playground provide facilities for school and other group tours.
