8 min walk: An unpretentious, gets-you-where-you-want-to-go kinda place, Aurel is that neighbourhood bar where the locals go to start (or end!) their evening. Its year-round Christmas lights, warm blankets and cosy interior decoration makes it the go-to choice for when you need some peace and quiet during the day to work alongside a cappuccino or at night for a bustling, lively atmosphere. Even though the popular place can get quite busy, with people sitting wherever they can in and around the bar including along the curb outside of it, the friendly waiters will quickly serve you, and with a smile too. Taste their classic Caipirinhas, or try a Diskoschorle (vodka, club mate and red bull).

The tables are quite big, inviting us to socialise and meet new people. The happy hour from 18-21h makes the bar get quite full, however it also adds to the atmosphere of the place. As a plus: smoking is not aloud inside, however if that bothers you, I recommend going to another neighbourhood favourite that’s just five minutes away by foot, Aurel.

The name does the cocktail lounge justice: those panoramic windows are perfect to make the most of the beautiful sunset reflecting on the Elbe and falling into Hamburg’s skyline. The dress code is smart-casual, however if you still want to insist to wear sneakers, then you’ll have to expect some funny looks from the bouncers at the ground floor (personal experience). From 6 to 8pm the bar also offers sushi from “Hamburgs most well known female sushi chef”-small mix platter at 35 euros, large one at 65 euros.

If you come with at least two people and are looking for a good portion of grilled meat, you should try the Köz Urfa plate, a mixed grill with all the meat specialities of the house. This is true greatness.
