Main Touristic Attractions

The main attractions in Florence that you cannot miss!
The Uffizi Gallery is a museum complex in Florence. The three unified galleries are one of the most important museums in the world for their quantity and quality. There are the most conspicuous existing collection of Raffaello and Botticelli, as well as the fundamental group of works by Giotto, Tiziano, Pontormo, Bronzino, Andrea del Sarto, Caravaggio, Dürer, Rubens and others. A USEFUL TIP: If you plan your visit in advance, the best suggestion I can give you is to book the access from 4:00 pm in the afternoon. It will be the best time to enjoy the museum with a quieter atmosphere and enjoy the sunset from the windows of the Loggia Della Galleria. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.uffizi.it/Tickets

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is an imposing gothic church built on the site where the ancient Cathedral of Florence stood, the Church of Santa Reparata, whose remains are visible in the crypt. Visiting the Cathedral is free! The entrance to the Cathedral is free and for this reason, there are long queues to enter. Don’t worry, usually, the line moves quite fast. The number of visitors inside the Cathedral is limited mainly because of the noise that comes to be created in this place of religious worship; recently (from July 16, 2012) to improve the situation, the directors of the Duomo decided to oblige groups of more than 4 people to rent radios or audio guides (cost from 2 up to 2.50 euros per person) in order to reduce the noise of visitors and increase the number of persons allowed in every single moment.

If you love panoramic views, this is the right place to spend some time during your holiday in Florence. Climbing to the top of Giotto’s Bell Tower, one of the symbols of Florence is a wonderful experience. The bell tower of the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore offers, from its top, some breathtaking panoramic views. Get ready for a challenging experience: to reach the top of the tower you will have to climb 414 steps! To enter you need a ticket, we ask you to purchase it directly on the following link: https:///grandemuseodelduomo.waf.it/it/ticket-il-grande-museo-del-duomo NB: the single ticket allows a single entry to all the sites of the Grande Museo del Duomo - Monumental Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore - composed of Museo dell' Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, Cupola del Brunelleschi, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Baptistery of San Giovanni and Crypt of Santa Reparata.

Another beautiful work by the Florentine Master Filippo Brunelleschi where you can admire a 360-degree panoramic view of the city of Florence. The best way to admire the Dome is to climb its 463 steps: the path leads through the interior of the Dome and allows you to see up close the beautiful frescoes by Giorgio Vasari. To get on the Dome you need a ticket, my advice is to book the visit online beforehand. Santa Croce is one of my favorite churches. Literally hosts an immense artistic heritage: the frescoes (1380) by Taddeo Gaddi in Major Chapel tell the story of the "Holy Cross" while Giotto’s beautiful frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels illustrate scenes from the life of Saint Francis and Saint John the Evangelist. An unusual relief, the Annunciation, in golden stone by Donatello, enriches the right aisle of the basilica. There is also a memorial to the playwright of the XIX° century Giovanni Battista Niccolini left of the entrance, which is believed to have been an inspiration for the Statue of Liberty. Below the website where you can book your visit in advance: http://www.santacroceopera.it/it/default.aspx N.B. Santa Croce is a monumental complex that includes the Basilica, Pazzi Chapel, the Opera Museum, the Cenacle, three cloisters, as well as internal and external spaces, integral parts of the visit path.

Piazzale Michelangelo is our "Florentine Balcony". The most breathtaking panoramic point of all Florence. We suggest you to go there during sunset time, the show of colors that can reserve this viewpoint is fabulous. It can be reached either by bus 12 or 13 from the center or by double-decker buses around the city. You can also reach it on foot, following the large staircases that start from Piazza Poggi, just below Piazzale Michelangelo. Our advice, however, is to walk there, here the link to google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/A3KjHquCpZnFXt6aA

Guide to the neighborhoods

Whether you are looking for something to do with the whole family, whether you want to taste a lunch with typical Tuscan flavors, whether you are looking for those particular ingredients, necessary for the success of a local recipe, or a souvenir to take home, the San Lorenzo Market is the right place for you! The Market is, in fact, divided into two separate sections: one is indoors and is commonly known as the Central Market, mainly dedicated to food, and the other one is outdoors and develops along the narrow streets surrounding the large Central Market’s building. Here you will find, however, leather items - local artifacts for the most part - clothes and any kind of souvenirs. Both the external and the internal markets should be included in the list of things to do and see in Florence - in addition to the usual museums and most important places of interest - especially if you need a break between visiting one museum and another. I suggest you to dedicate an entire morning to the San Lorenzo Market, concluding your visit around lunchtime for a nice meal on the inside.

The Santo Spirito district, located in the south-west of the historical center, includes a vast area of the Oltrarno and has as its center in Piazza Santo Spirito. The Oltrarno is a meeting point par excellence of intellectuals, artists and bohemians, in 2017 Lonely Planet elected it first in the ranking of the most “cool” neighborhoods in the world. The square, animated by day markets, tourists and art students, is one of the chosen places of the Florentine nightlife. The square comes alive in the early evening when the artisan workshops and art studios close and the scene is stolen from the nightclubs, restaurants, cafes of various types, the majority with outdoor spaces. If you are looking for a good cocktail or want to have a good aperitif, you are in the right place!

Outside the most popular tourist destinations, heading towards the area that stretches from Via Pietrapiana to Piazza Beccaria, you will find a lively neighborhood, full of shops, bars and restaurants: the district of Sant’Ambrogio. The most iconic and famous place of the neighborhood is undoubtedly its Historic Market of Sant'Ambrogio, a real point of reference for lovers of good food, where you can find high-quality fresh products such as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. If you want to breathe the typical atmosphere of a city market and taste the local products, the Sant'Ambrogio Market is a must-see, offering you a typical insight into the everyday life of the Renaissance city.

Restaurants

If you are in Florence you have to taste the Lampredotto! We don’t tell you what it is ;), but it is a typical Tuscan dish! Our favorite place is inside the San Lorenzo Central Market. A sandwich costs on average 3.50 euros and the specialties do not stop at tripe and lampredotto...in addition to the local wine, there are first courses, soups, bollito and much more, at super advantageous prices! Do not be discouraged by the line, the service is super fast, you will be served sooner than you think! Enjoy :)

The Trattoria I 13 Gobbi is located in Via del Porcellana 9R, a typical tuscan restaurant with a romantic atmosphere decorated with wooden wine cases. One of our favorite dishes is Rigatoni Zupperia, their most famous dish and it is a pasta with the following ingredients: mozzarella, tomato, vodka and parmesan. In this place, you can also enjoy a good steak. Between one dish and the other take a look at the tables close to yours; the club is one of the favorite places of the Fiorentina players! https://www.casatrattoria.com/trattoria-13-gobbi/

Le Volpi e l'Uva is a wine shop born 25 years ago and over the years had many food and wine awards. The policy of this wine shop is to promote small regional and French wine producers. All this is accompanied by small Italian appetizers such as butter and anchovy croutons, sausage and stracchino, foie gras with caramelized onions. If you are a wine lover and want to spend a late afternoon discovering local wines and not, you are in the right place!

In every dish of the Osteria di Giovanni there is history. The history of a family: the one of Giovanni Latini and his love for catering. A tradition that began in 2004, Giovanni and his family opened the restaurant in Via del Moro, a few steps from Santa Maria Novella. The cuisine of this tavern is typically Tuscan, ribollita and soup of spelt and beans are a great classics that you can taste after the appetizer of Giovanni: cutting board with Tuscan ham and artisanal cured meats, crostini with liver and bruschetta with cabbage pesto, shepherd’s ricotta. In the second course, meat prevails, beef cut with mushrooms, the Florentine steak and the guinea fowl stuffed with his liver rolled with bacon. The desserts are all homemade (I love the Cheese Cake). In addition to the dessert of the day, there is always the drunk pear served with ice cream, pineapple carpaccio marinated in pink pepper syrup served with lemon ice cream or the most classic panna cotta. The cellar is well stocked, with labels that represent Italy from the North to the South.

Ice Cream Shop

The place is very nice, furnished with a somewhat vintage adorable style. The ice cream is stored at a temperature in steel containers (such as those used once). The choice of ice cream is limited, but the tastes are all excellent. Here you can find the taste Buontalenti, dedicated to the inventor of ice cream, which was just Florentine! There is the possibility to enjoy your ice cream inside the ice cream shop, on a couple of tables for customers, without any price increase.

A small shop with a retro taste in Piazza Duomo at the intersection with Via del Proconsolo from which always comes a tasty scent of freshly cooked waffle. In short, a real invitation for those who love ice cream. It’s one of our favorite ice cream parlors, they produce organic ice cream and handmade cones. One of our favorite flavors is their sorbet "Chianti Colli Fiorentini docg", accompanied by chocolate is a real delight. We also recommend fruit flavors for which only seasonal fruit is used. https://www.edoardobio.com/it/home-it/

Visite turistiche

One of the favorite destinations for those who want to discover a corner of classic Tuscany close to the city is always Fiesole, from whose hill you can enjoy an unforgettable view of the city of Giglio. Fiesole is a secret town, made of beautiful renaissance villas, avenues bordered by cypresses, gardens and a remarkable archaeological area, testimony of the ancient past of the city that, of Etruscan origin, was already fervent when there was still no trace of Florence.
Do not miss the archaeological area with its beautiful Roman theatre.
For more information on the museum area of Fiesole follow the link: https://www.museidifiesole.it/musei/area-archeologica The center of Fiesole is only 7 km from the center of Florence and it is easily accessible by bus, car and even on foot for those who love to walk along secondary streets full of charm and history.

If you’re planning to get there by public transportation, you can take the bus from Florence Santa Maria Novella Train Station on the left exit (arrivals side) P.zza Adua, here there are the Ataf stops, urban and suburban public transport service (www.ataf.net). Take the bus n° 1 or 6, 11, 14, 17 and 23 and arrive in Piazza San Marco (get off at the 3rd stop)/ Via Della Dogana from where, every 20minutes from 7 am to midnight, bus n° 7 for Fiesole leaves ( last stop is Piazza Mino) Walking time about 20 minutes.
