Walk

This is a blanket bog in the area of Derrygimbla on the Wild Atlantic Way. It is a looped walk with interactive information boards - the area is significant for two reasons, Firstly, the first non-stop transatlantic flight by Alcock and Brown which came from Newfoundland in Canada ended here in the bog, when the courageous aviators landed their Vickers Vimy biplane here in 1919. Secondly, Derrygimbla was the site chosen by the inventor Guglielmo Marconi to build his permanent radio station where he transmitted the first transatlantic radio signal in 1907. This area is wonderful - the pathways lead you around the bog where you can see Bog Cotton, wild flowers and fauna, sheep grazing and an unforgettable wild landscape. The walk takes approx. 1.5 hrs. We regularly visit here as a family and enjoy a picnic after or a visit to a coffee shop in nearby Clifden town.

Roundstone is an attractive harbour village perched on the edge of the Atlantic. There are a number of coffee shops and restaurants here and during summer many events take place - a pony show, a dog show and a weekly Sunday farmer's Market. There is a very good children's playground overlooking the water. Just outside this village on the road to Clifden there are two amazing beaches - the spectacular crescent shaped beaches of Gurteen and Dogs Bay. We highly recommend you take a picnic with you, walk along these two beautiful beaches, take a swim or just dip your feet and finish off the trip with a warm tea/coffee and some treats. Lovely place to visit all year round.

Food scene

There is a great Food Truck located 5km south of Leenane along the Wild Atlantic Way, and the views from this place are unbeatable. Local produce is used, all dishes are homemade and the taste is amazing. A favourite of ours is the dish of mussels - which are grown along the killary harbour - the freshest you will ever taste! The is limited seating outside - perfect for dining al fresco.
