Sightseeing

You can see giant sperm whales as close as you’ll find them anywhere in the world! Also possible to see fur seals, dusky dolphins, hectors dolphins and a wide range of other whales and dolphins that pass through Kaikouras waters. Highly recommend but do check the weather forecast if you’re prone to sea sickness.

In my opinion this walk is one of the best kept secrets in nz. If the weather is nice then it is a must do! You can either park at the seal colony on point kean and walk across and back which will take around and hour or so depending on how many photos you stop for, or you can walk from the air B&B which is around a 2.5 hour round trip. The views are stunning and you can spot plenty of fur seals, and if you’re lucky maybe some dolphins, orcas or even during winter you can see the odd whale. Make sure you walk up and across the top of the peninsula as the walk around the bottom can take a lot longer if you have to dodge the seals.

Food scene

The Strawberry Tree is an Irish bar and restaurant in the Main Street in town, only a 10 minute walk from the air B&B. It has a nice atmosphere and a large beer garden out the back that gets sunshine all day. Great food and beer and live music every Friday night, and regular gigs on Saturday nights. It is owned by a local fisherman so there is usually a selection of yummy fresh seafood including crayfish. Local favourite

Nins Bin is becoming world famous as an iconic place to stop and try crayfish on your way too or from Picton and Blenheim. Situated right on the beachfront it has a great reputation for fresh seafood and awesome views. It’s owned by locals who check their craypots most mornings to ensure you get the freshest crays possible.

Activity

If you’re feeling adventurous a day trip to climb mount Fyffe is definitely worth the effort. Usually taking around 6 hours to get up and back down you will be rewarded with impressive views of the Kaikoura Peninsula and the surrounding Seaward Kaikoura Mountain Range. Although not a super difficult hike you still need to be prepared by taking food, water, and the necessary clothing, and checking the weather forecast is a must do, as people have been caught out in the past, and the views are only good on a clear sunny day. Alternatively you can always call into one of the local helicopter offices and arrange a flight to the top to have a picnic and save yourself the sore legs.
