The lake and the dam are very pretty. It is a short walk to the dam and visitors can walk across the dam, plus I have seen people fishing there. Update 6/6/2023: visited the dam - it is letting a lot of water out and there is mist. The lake is not super high, I think this is in anticipation of snow melt. No swimming or boating on the lake. The gravel road is about 3-4 miles from Hwy 108, just past Sierra Village.

Well known swimming hole. I have been told the trail is a little bit difficult. Take the Pinecrest Lake Trail, starting on the East side of the lake. About one mile up is a sign where the trail forks to the east.

Twain Harte Lake is one of the most popular swimming venues among our guests. Located one mile from the cabin; our guests have access to the lake from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Entrance fee is not included in the cabin rent: $8.00 per day, per person. Requires the cabin owner to place the guest on the Gatehouse List for admission to the lake.

Stunningly beautiful scenery. I just read an article stating that Sonora Pass is the steepest highway in the United States. Sonora Pass is beautiful because there are massive granite boulders the size of a house along the road. It is a very close-up and personal view of the Sierra Nevada. It connects to Kennedy Meadows (cafe available with decent food), but beyond that is a narrow, winding road usually still has some snow in the summer. Beyond the summit, on the down slope, Eastern side of the pass are broad vistas, the US Marine Corps winter training station, horse camps. The road finally connects to Hwy 395 which is on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, connecting Reno to Bishop. I would urge people to take this drive. I have driven it so many times, yet I never tire of it. There is potential for thunder/lightning in the summer. Also, note that turning right on Hwy 395 will connect to Tioga Pass - another outstanding drive (massive granite domes, Tenaya Lake, Tuolumne Meadows) that should not be missed. I will mention that when entering Yosemite NP, there is a ranger station and if you explain that you are "just passing through, returning to Twain Harte," you may not have to pay the park entry fee. No guarantees though; we may have had a lenient ranger the day we took the drive. This route then loops around to the Western side of the mountain range, to Yosemite, Groveland, Sonora, and back to Twain Harte. A full day, long drive, but truly worthwhile. Consult a map for full understanding of the mileage, etc.
