The original Tsutenkaku was built in 1912, and it shocked the people of that era; with a height of 64 meters, it was the tallest structure in the Orient. It was also one of the two great attractions of Shin-Sekai at that time, the other being Luna Park, an amusement park with an area of more than 132,000 square meters. Eventually the Tsutenkaku, which reminded local residents of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, became the symbol of Osaka. Around 180 original items featuring Tsutenkaku, the symbol tower of Osaka, are on sale including: mobile phone straps, towels and miniature figurines. Around 80 original goods featuring Billiken-san, god of good fortune, are on sale including amulets promising good luck, cell phone straps, lottery ticket holders and T-shirts. *Observatory admission fee required, pay at the shop on the 5F.

Osaka's most famous shrine by far is Sumiyoshitaisha (Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine), the headquarters of some 2000 Sumiyoshi shrines throughout Japan. It enshrines three gods that have long been worshiped for protecting the nation, for protecting sea voyages and for promoting waka (31-syllable) poetry―and thus is a place of pilgrimage for sea travelers, students of the military arts, and waka poets. The main shrine is designed in the oldest style of shrine construction and is registered as a National Treasure. The shrine's symbol, the gracefully arched Taiko-bashi Bridge, spans the pond in front of the shrine. This shrine is referred to in the "Nihon Shoki" (the Chronicles of Japan), in "Kojiki" (Ancient Chronicles) and in "The Tale of Genji".

The Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, opened in May 1936, is located in Tennoji Park―situated at the Chausuyama corner, the site of the former residence of the Sumitomo family. If you walk along the dimly-lit passageway following the arrows, you will see colorful paintings and ceramics through pale glass. The museum preserves many important cultural properties, housing a collection of about 8,500 works of Japanese and Chinese Art. The site was donated by the Sumitomo family to Osaka City, together with the noted Keitakuen Garden; the museum building was built by the City.
