Food scene

This is the best bakery in the Barossa! Established in 1924 and still baking in the original wood-fired oven, the baked goods are preservative free (buy and eat the same day for freshness!) No fake stuff here. The breads are the real deal, amazing sourdough but I love all the bread, white, wholemeal, multigrain, kibble, ciabatta...all made with dough that goes through a slow ferment. The pasties are something else (a great hangover cure!), and the pies have been voted some of the best in Australia. The beef and mushroom and the chicken pie are my favourites. People come from far and wide to get their hands on the pretzels so get there early if you want to try one, they often sell out. If you like Maggie Beer's Pate there is nothing better than her pate on an Apex Salt Stick (pretzel stick). Products available can vary from day to day so if you have your heart set on something in particular phone and order a day in advance...85 630 000.

This is the best restaurant in Tanunda. Delicious, modern Vietnamese food with an amazing wine list. Don't go without ordering the betel leaves....but everything on the menu is amazing. Try and leave room for dessert too!

This restaurant never disappoints whether we are there for lunch or dinner, with or without kids, we always have a fabulous meal. The gardens are beautiful as is the interior space of the restaurant. This is often the choice of restaurants for locals to celebrate special occasions but it is also perfect for a long casual lunch.

Sightseeing

The view from Mengler's Hill Lookout is a must see on your list of things to do/see whilst in the Barossa. This is one of the best spots to view the Valley (along with the views from Steingarten or Rifle Range Rd). Drive up Mengler Hill and park in the carpark. Below the carpark is the Barossa Sculpture Park which you are free to wonder around as you take in the fabulous view of the Valley floor beyond. This is one of our favourite spots to go to watch electrical storms too!

In the springtime the wildflowers in the woods at Bethany Reserve make for the best photography background. As our kids were growing up we would take them here every Spring for a photoshoot in the wildflowers. There is also a lovely, child-friendly creek to splash and play in. The shelter shed and grass/oval area can be hired out for events but most of the time it is relatively quiet and often you have the place to yourself. There is a small playground next to the creek and there is a little foot bridge to cross the creek if you don't want to risk getting wet! The views of the Bethany hills are great from here too.

This is one of our favourite spots to take visitors from interstate and overseas. The views from Steingarten are fabulous and we often spot kangaroos between the rows of vines. Take a bottle of wine with you and soak in the views of the Valley below (but only if the weather is good!) Looking west you can see all the way to the ocean. There is also a great walk from Steingarten that takes you along the hills towards Rowland Flat and Jacob's Creek.
