Castle Drogo is a country house and mixed-revivalist castle near Drewsteignton, Devon, England. Constructed between 1911 and 1930, it was the last castle to be built in England. The client was Julius Drewe, the hugely successful founder of the Home and Colonial Stores. Drewe chose the site in the belief that it formed part of the lands of his supposed medieval ancestor, Drogo de Teigne. The architect he chose to realise his dream was Edwin Lutyens, then at the height of his career. Lutyens lamented Drewe's determination to have a castle but nevertheless produced one of his finest buildings. The architectural critic, Christopher Hussey, described the result: "The ultimate justification of Drogo is that it does not pretend to be a castle. It is a castle, as a castle is built, of granite, on a mountain, in the twentieth century".

This crackingly good beach is part of the designated South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s also won awards from the Marine Conservation Society and the coveted Blue Flag, so you know it’s clean. You can see Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island from the beach - a couple of interesting locations that are well worth a visit. You can get to Burgh Island by taking a ride on the famous ‘sea-tractor’, which the kids will love. Bantham is shallow and sandy so it’s great for families with kids who want to do a little swimming or paddling, and to keep anxious parents’ minds at rest there are lifeguards on duty from May to September. At low tide, you’ll find loads of shallow pools that warm up quickly in the sun and are perfect for crab hunting. Surfing Trips But there’s more to Bantham beach than just sun, sand and ice cream. It’s also one of the best surfing beaches in South Devon. The beach has got mellow waves for beginners (known in surf-speak as ‘ankle slappers’), while the mouth of the River Avon fires out enough rips and breaks to test even the most radical hot-doggers. Once you’ve had enough of the waves there’s a pub nearby serving great beer and home-cooked meals. If you want to stay near the beach there are plenty of great B&Bs in the local village. The beach is well served with its own facilities, including a beach shop where you can buy all those little essentials. While dogs are not allowed on the beach between May and September they are allowed on the Estuary all year round, which you can get to at low tide.

South Sands in Salcombe is one of the most unspoilt beaches in South Devon. It’s located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the mouth of the estuary, but don’t think that it’s all nature reserves and nothing else because there’s a huge range of different things to see and do all year round. Sun, Sea and Sand You don’t have to travel abroad in the summer to find some sunshine. During the summer months the South Devon climate is almost Mediterranean, and combined with soft sand and clear seas, you’ve got all the right ingredients for a family seaside holiday. There are car parks close to the beach and disabled access for those with mobility restrictions. South Sands is actually part of a cove so you’re sheltered from the sea winds, and it provides a neat little sun trap if you just want to lie back and soak up the rays.

It’s date night, evenings out with friends, family lunches and chats over coffee. Our dressing up box has gained a legendary reputation in its own right amongst adults and children alike, making for endless entertainment and memorable holiday snaps. Serving a hearty breakfast first thing in the morning, easy lunches, joy filled dinners and plenty of teas, cakes, coffees and ice creams, much of our menu is characterised by the local seafood that we’re so lucky to have available on our doorstep. Firm favourites are the buckets of prawns and platters of shellfish, but we’re also partial to big juicy steaks, Devon cream teas and an endless supply of beer and wine.

Welcoming visitors for more than 20 years, our particular brand of shabby chic beach restaurant always buzzes with activity as people congregate for breakfast, lunch, dinner and all the bits in between, throughout the year. All ice cream colours and an eclectic mix of decor from some of our favourite aspects of life by the sea, The Winking Prawn is a family run and family friendly restaurant where we aim to offer something for everyone. Sharpham was in the first wave of modern vineyards to get going after the demise of all commercial vineyards during World War II and has been at the heart of the industry for nearly 40 years. Our first vineyard was planted in 1981 on the west bank of the River Dart on the Sharpham estate. A further vineyard was planted in 2008 on the east bank of the River Dart on the Sandridge Barton estate on a site carefully selected for having the best attributes for a vineyard. This vineyard has grown over the years and supplies the majority of grapes that make Sharpham premium wines. A new state of the art winery has been built for the production of Sharpham wine on the Sandridge Barton estate, and a future visitor centre is being developed alongside the winery. Our cool climate provides our vines with a long growing season to gently ripen the grapes, preserving wonderful fresh aromas and flavours.

Another Salcombe first! Every story starts with an idea. Ours was simple: to create timeless clothes inspired by the British coast. With its cobbled streets, crystal clear water and unbeatable views, Salcombe was the perfect inspiration for professional skier, Alastair Parker-Swift’s first menswear collection. When he wasn’t competing for England, Alistair ran a successful windsurfing school. It was here that Crew Clothing was born. Alistair’s first collection consisted of the rugby shirt, detailed with our iconic ’93 patch. He took it from Salcombe to Cowes Week to the King’s Road. 79 stores later and the rest is history.
