Pubs

Literally five minutes walk from the Cabin! Dave, the manager, is fun and very welcoming. The Foresters has a nice garden and restaurant serving pub food and veggie goodies too. We go there for a pint and a night off cooking. Prices are very reasonable.

Food scene

A ten-minute drive from the Cabin. The Griffin has a reputation for particularly good food. We go there for celebrations, especially in good weather as they have a lovely garden with magnificent views over the Weald. You will need to book.

We like this Indian for take-away food although have not eaten in the restaurant. The food is reliably fresh and feels authentic (not too much sugar!) It is in the village of Nutley which is 6 minuets drive away.

In the village of Forest Row 15 minutes away. We use this fish and chip shop because we like the fresh fish and crisp chips.

Lovely traditional tea rooms that are close enough to us to take in on the way home from a forest walk. They can be seen on google maps but do ask if you would like to design a walk that goes past them.

City/town information

The town's landmarks include Lewes Castle, Lewes Priory, Bull House (the former home of Thomas Paine), Southover Grange and public gardens, and a 16th-century timber-framed Wealden hall house known as Anne of Cleves House. It is a great place to hang out in a café, rummage through arty antique shops and sip a beer. Home of Harveys brewery a must for any beer lover. There are also lots of fantastic walks over the South Downs with panoramic views to the sea. Lewes is a 25 minute drive south.

Brighton is famous for being an alternative London, with all the shops but also the ancient Lanes, all the pubs, clubs, and restaurants but also the open-air theatre and festivals, Brighton was the first city in England to celebrate Gay Pride. We love it there because it is safe but has a unique buzz. There is also the beach with a boardwalk where you can catch fire eaters, circus acts and munch on every imaginable snack. Brighton is a 40-minute drive from here.

Sightseeing

Sat on the side of Weir Wood Reservoir, Standen is beautiful and not normally too crowded Arts & Crafts house. It is about 25 minuets drive from here and well worth a visit.

Sheffield Park House & Gardens 16 Minuets from us is the magnificent Sheffield park and house. Being National Trust, it is quite busy but the gardens are amazing. Best of all is a funny little place on the grand drive into the park, look on your left for a sign to Sheffield park Vineyard and Nursery. A quirky little place with treasures packed in around plants for sale. The owner is a true character and quite a plantsman as well as wine maker.
