The Ritchies are great friends of ours and are doing a stellar job in providing an extensive array of wines. They are opening their new cellar door in May which has one of the best views in Victoria. Currently you can buy a picnic hamper and enjoy food and wine with a stunning backdrop. They also frequently hold events so it is worthwhile checking their website to see if they are holding an event while you are here. I recently went to see Shakespeare in the vines - Romeo and Juliet - which was the best performance I have seen of this classic play!

You will need to get in early here as their produce is often sold out by 11.00 am and on Saturday this can sometimes be 10.00am. They open at 7.30 am and are closed on Sunday and Monday. If you don't want to miss out you can ring and order your bread which is what a lot of locals do.

Ok - Friday night at the front bar is as about as local as you can get in Mansfield. If you don't wish to venture in there head out back for some good solid pub meals. There is a deck outside to eat if the weather is conducive.

Dean and Gil who also own The Produce Store run this. It's good pub food with a large courtyard to enjoy a drink. They often do live music so check their website to see what is going on.

This is a great shop run by Andy. Fantastic juices and healthy cakes. She has organic produce. Great smells and good vibes in this shop. It is a good place to get a coffee if you are doing a walk to the Botanical Gardens.

If you are here for a few days I recommend an outing to the King Valley. You take the spectacular drive via Tolmie to Italy of the North East. I sometimes take a quick detour to do the short Powers Lookout walk on way over. There are many wineries to visit. Check out winesofthekingvalley.com and I recommend booking for lunch as it's a very popular region.

The market is held every third Saturday of the month. I often buy plants from Alison and Andrew as they a excellent plants people with extensive horticultural knowledge. My youngest son is always nagging to buy another chicken from the poultry man to add to his eclectic collection of birds. The Austrian from Cheshunt will be there with his delicious bread. There is generally a good array of local produce and it's a very happy atmosphere where a lot of us like to have a chin wag!

If you look up Plain Creek Loop mansfieldmtbuller.com.au you will find directions. This is a very pretty walk to a waterfall. You could pack a picnic to have on return at the Delatite river or drive back via the Delatite Winery for a picnic hamper.

Fantastic views when you get to the top. You have to enter through private property but it is a telecom road so public access is allowed. It is about a 3 hour return easy grade walk and I often take a picnic to have at the top.

This is a gorgeous walk along the Delatite River. The Maple Tree forest is magical. Park at the lower Carters Road Carpark and you will see the path over the road to your right. Be aware that this is part of The Epic Bike track so you are sharing it with mountain bike riders. It is a 5 km return walk. You of course could also take you mountain bike on it. Merimbah Park where you will end up is very pretty and a nice place to picnic.

There is a little side track that is really fun but you have to be a competent rider as there are a lot of twists and turns. I usually ride about 5 km until you come to the view in this photo. A very local ride with spectacular views of the valley. If you don't wish to ride it also is a very pleasant walk.

Ok - just know this walk is a 40 minute grind if you a a good hiker but it is well worth the effort. The views are spectacular looking back over the Mansfield Valley. There is a bit of rock climbing to get to the saddle so be aware of your limitations. Also the path going up can be gravelly and loose so I suggest as hiking pole especially for coming down.

Jamieson is a lovely little historical town. It boasts many deciduous trees and is particularly attractive in Autumn. The river has many swimming holes and is picture perfect during Summer. Head down Perkins st and then down Grey st and park your vehicle. You can do a loop walk around the river (part of this will be through the caravan park but there is public access). It's a lovely walk. The food in town is limited although a Thai restaurant has just opened and friends say it is good. You may want to pack a picnic to have on the river.

This is also located in the King Valley and you could include a visit here as part of you King Valley experience. Paradise Falls is a short hike and especially good to visit after rain. I love it as the red rocks remind me of the Northern Territory. There is a delightful bakery called The Oven at Cheshunt run by an amusing Austrian who has run this forever. The food is nice rustic and good for the soul! The other place of interest is Lake William Hovell. It is a lovely place for a swim, canoe or a picnic. Just note that a trip to the King Valley will take a whole day as there is so much to see.

Of course Buller is great for skiing but outside of Winter there are some lovely walks. A very pretty and easy one is summit nature walk. It is a 4.1 km return hike. Take some good bread purchased at the Alpine Patisserie and cheese (Mark's IGA have a very good selection) and have a picnic on the summit. Note this is an alpine area so pack clothing accordingly and also note that dogs are not allowed in the national park unless they owners have a permit.

I love this space and it is a leash free space for your dogs to have a good run and meet some other dogs! Of course it is not anything like the Melbourne Botanical Gardens but the trees are starting to mature. My favourite spot is to lie amongst the olive trees with my head on my pack pack as we often ride in here from the rail trail, providing of course it's nice weather. If you come on a Saturday morning you can join Park Run at 8 am or yoga in the park ( if you are interested in joining yoga i can give you more details as times do vary). Also every second Saturday people come in to barter produce and Fluff is there to kindly for free sharpen your secateurs1
