Bring light jacket for coastal fog days or cooler evenings.
Most beaches are lightly filled during the week. There are bbq pits and tables if you want to bbq during the day and you can reserve them if you are concerned they may be full. Kayaks are rentable at Goleta Beach, Bikes at Isla Vista bikes, and surfing lessons, paddle board and yoga on the beach with private instructors. Let me know I can get you a schedule.
