Kartchner is an incredibly-preserved, living, cave system. The desert scenery on the drive is beautiful, and the rock formations in the caves below are breathtaking. Plus, the temperature underground is very consistent, so it's the perfect retreat from the heat or cold! Book in advance--it's hard to get same-day or even next-day bookings. About 1 hour from our home and you must arrive approximately 1 hour in advance of your tour time.

"Museum" often confuses people--think of it more as an outdoor zoo of indigenous animals and plants, with indoor galleries of both animals and art sprinkled throughout. The absolute best time to go is in the spring or after the summer rains when everything is blooming. If you go during the summer months, arrive at opening, wear sunscreen, and take lots of water. A photographer's paradise of desert views and wildlife. Enjoyable for all ages. Also fun, stop at the scenic pullout at Gates Pass on your way there or back for some stunning views. It's about 45 minutes from our house. (With the Tucson Attractions Passport, you get one free child admission with the purchase of an adult admission.)

We love Mount Lemmon so much that we got married there! It's a little over an hour from our house to the very top. On average about 30 degrees cooler than Tucson, so it's a great way to escape the heat in the summer months. If you love to learn about the science of the mountains, we highly recommend downloading the "Mt. Lemmon Science Tour" app. It's essentially a four-part podcast that will last you the exact duration of the trip from base to summit, explaining the geologic phenomenon along the way, as well as recommending which scenic pullouts to stop and enjoy. You'll see the signs that tell you when to begin playing the tracks in the app, but download it in advance and you'll likely lose signal on the mountain. There are a handful of restaurants on the mountain, all great. Our preferred method is to bring a picnic with us and then stop by the Cookie Cabin for a giant, warm cookie with ice cream on top. If you enjoy hiking, trails abound on Mt. Lemmon. There are also numerous campsites, picnic areas, ramadas, etc. The ski-lift runs year round and is fun, especially for kids. (If you buy the Tucson Attractions Passport, you get a free ticket with the purchase of one ticket.)

The U of A campus is beautiful, with many shady, grassy areas to stop and eat lunch or enjoy the scenery. Our three favorite things to do 1) Enter the College of Optical Sciences building and take their free, self-guided tour of the history of optics. Make sure you go up to the patio on the top floor to enjoy the incredible view of the Catalinas! 2) Visit the Flandrau Planetarium and 3) Take pictures at the historic Old Main building.

Very family-friendly. All animals are taxidermied, allowing for closer inspection than one often gets in a zoo. An awesome museum to learn about Arizona's history! Very kid-friendly. A medium-sized museum, you can see the whole thing in an hour if you really want, or two if you take your time. General admission is only $10! You'll probably have to pay to park (I think the museum validates parking? I'm not sure), so while you're down there, walk to Maingate Square to grab lunch at one of the many restaurants. (Buy one get one free admission with the Tucson Attractions Passport.)

Sabino Canyon has both paved trails and dirt hiking paths. The most well known hike is the "Seven Falls" hike that takes you to a natural pool hidden in the desert. You have the option to either hop on a tram that will take you to the Seven Falls trailhead for $4 a person, or walk the 2 miles yourself. From the trailhead, it's 5 miles round trip. Eegee's is a local Tucson chain. Maybe it's not all that special to outsiders, but it's a hometown favorite. Sub sandwiches, amazing fries (dip them in their house ranch!), and of course, the "Eegee" drink--something between a slushy and shaved ice.
