A working flour mill (check opening times before you visit) and a lovely nature reserve with a tree trail, lots of information about the insects/birds/plants you can find on your walk. Not too big, so a great one for kids! There's even a covered hide that you can watch the birds from too.
Oughtonhead Common is a nature reserve just a 30 minute walk or a short drive/cycle from our house. It's a beautiful, tranquil space full of wild plants and animals. You can walk the trail around the common, or explore the wilder spaces in the middle by the stream.

A medium sized grocery shop with a good selection of food, drink and household items. Not as nice as Waitrose, but a little cheaper and handy if you're in the centre of town.

Best coffee in Hitchin. Pick yourself up a bag of locally roasted beans as a souvenir, they'll grind them in store if you ask too.

Great for bagels and coffee, really buzzy atmosphere and great design. The shop is really nice too, good for homewares and gifts.

A really great vegan food place, although a little on the pricey side. I usually go here for their delicious juices, smoothies and milkshakes. The food is really good and so healthy, and they have a good selection of raw vegan cakes. However, it's worth a trip for the decor alone, gorgeous plants and a really chilled vibe.

The food is really good and so healthy, and they have a good selection of raw vegan cakes. However, it's worth a trip for the decor alone, gorgeous plants and a really chilled vibe.
I haven't actually tried this place yet, but it always looks lovely and smells delicious! I've heard good things about their Mexican food.

Not walkable from our house, but drive or take a cab...its' not far but well worth the visit. A delicious vegetarian cafe, with a beautiful sunny conservatory. Check out their classes and events programme too.

Lovely beer garden, street food every Friday at 6pm with a rotating list of vendors. Really great atmosphere, and kids are welcome until 8.30pm. Lots of live music and events, check their facebook for the latest info.

Only open for a few months of the year, the lavender fields are a wonderful sight during the summer when the flowers are all in bloom. They have sunflower fields too. Your entry fee gets you a paper bag to fill with your own lavender cuttings that you can take home. A really popular spot with tourists, there's almost always a photoshoot happening there too! They have a lovely cafe with hot drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks plus a gift shop for all your lavender farm souvenirs.

I love this bookshop, and as we sadly don't have a great independent one in town this is the next best thing. Great selection of kids books, and I often go to dip into the recipe books and the nature section too. Take advantage of their 3 for 2 offer on books, you can never have too many!
