There is so much to see and it rather depends on your particular interests as to whether a hike up Thorpe Cloud, a wander around the splendour of Chatsworth House, or a day at Crich Tramway Museum will be for you, but there is certainly plenty of choice and generally a tearoom to add to the enjoyment! Walk from Milldale, across pretty Viator's Bridge and head into the limestone gorge of Dovedale, following the river. Look out for Doveholes, Reynard's Cave, and the imposing rock formations of Lover's Leap, Ilam Rockand Pickering Tor. Once you reach the stepping stones at the other end of the Dale, you will see Thorpe Cloud rising up on your left and Bunster Hill to your right. There are toilets and refreshments at the car park.

Dovedale
Walk from Milldale, across pretty Viator's Bridge and head into the limestone gorge of Dovedale, following the river. Look out for Doveholes, Reynard's Cave, and the imposing rock formations of Lover's Leap, Ilam Rockand Pickering Tor. Once you reach the stepping stones at the other end of the Dale, you will see Thorpe Cloud rising up on your left and Bunster Hill to your right. There are toilets and refreshments at the car park.

The cheese shop is always worth a visit as are the other two village shops with their ranges of locally produced foods. You can walk into Beresford Dale from here or visit the the site of Pilsbury Castle, once an iron age fort and then Norman fortification.

Hartington
From the house, walk down to the river and then along the lane away from Dovedale, crossing over the small road bridge to follow the footpath upstream, through Wolfscote Dale and on to the pretty village of Hartington with its duckpond, typical limestone cottages, pubs and tearooms. The cheese shop is always worth a visit as are the other two village shops with their ranges of locally produced foods. You can walk into Beresford Dale from here or visit the the site of Pilsbury Castle, once an iron age fort and then Norman fortification.

Tissington
A picture perfect Derbyshire village built around a Jacobean manor house (which is occasionally open to the public). There is a splendid tearoom opposite the pretty church and close by the duck pond. The village hall often hosts craft fairs during the summer and there are small shops that are worth exploring. The Tissington Trail, a 13 mile long surfaced cycle/walking trail using a disused railway line, runs right next to the village on its way from Parsley Hay to Ashbourne. Cycle hire is available at both of these locations. The national trail known as the Limestone Way also passes through Tissington.

They pass through very beautiful scenery and cycle hire is available from various points along them, including Ashbourne, Parsley Hay and Bakewell.

Further afield, in the Dark Peak, is the pretty village of Castleton with its castle, fascinating Blue John mines and wilder walking country. The Blue John mineral is only found in this area and the mines include Speedwell which is visited by boat.

One of our 'locals' and a pleasant walk of about 1.5 miles from our front door. The pub is very traditional and the beers are good, and there is also excellent food on offer in the form of small 'tapas' style dishes which can be ordered in combination.

The largest town in the Peak Park, bustling Bakewell is famous for it's puddings (not tarts!) and there are many tearooms and cake shops selling these treats. The River Wye runs through the town and many painters have recreated the medieval bridge. There is a market on Monday's and a farmer's market at the agricultural centre, generally on the last Saturday in the month.

The Natural Baths are located on the site of original Roman Baths now in the magnificent Georgian Crescent, recently restored, built in the 1780s by the 5th Duke of Devonshire. Visit Poole's Cavern and the lovely Pavillion Gardens. Time your visit to coincide with the Buxton Festival when the town, especially the Opera House, plays host to famous names from across a cultural spectrum.
