Underrated treasures

Breath-taking and often overlooked. The artwork and attention to detail inside this church is out of this world. It’s the most detailed and decorated church I’ve seen in Florence.

If you like museums, besides the popular Accademia and Uffizi, another wonderful one is the Bargello. It was a medieval prison (some decapitations occurred in the courtyard), now it’s a museum with several famous sculptures and old paintings. The architecture in itself is incredible!

Don’t tell anyone about this place, shhh. It is the highest point in the city; peaceful and beautiful. This is a 1000-year-old monastery, with a crypt below (if you are lucky you will catch the monks sing the traditional Gregorian chants! Behind, there’s a cemetery (Cimitero delle Porte Sante) with old and elaborate mausoleums, really with a look. You can sit at the steps of the monastery overlooking the entire city, especially beautiful during sunset. It is one of the most incredible things to do, and one of the top reasons why I haven’t moved away from Florence.

Built in 1337 and used a grain market and grain storage (on the third floor) to withstand famine or sieges. Then it became the offices of the craft and trade guilds. Now it’s a church and museum. Worth to at least look at it from the outside and appreciate its important history, even if you don’t go in!

Sightseeing

If you want to be immersed in a Renaissance garden, visit the Bardini Gardens. They're very different than the Boboli gardens, much more curated, intimate and with lovely views of the city. There’s a little cafe there where you can pause and overlook the city.

If you walk around the Piazzale Michelangelo area, towards the Forte Belvedere or Bardini gardens, you will be walking by the ancient city walls! The ones here pictured, seen from the San Miniato hill, are the “newer” walls, built in the 1500’s.

Light a candle

When you go into a church, you can light one of the candles in honor of a loved one. You don’t have to be Catholic, it’s a nice and thoughtful gesture. If you do, it’s customary to leave a small donation in return.
