Food scene

Classic Quebec local neighborhood grease spoon across the street from Sacré-Cœur Hospital. The irony that they are across the street from each other is palpable. These guys know what they’re doing, and their poutine is second to none. Montrealers from all over town make the trek just to come here. So the fact you’re 5 min away by car means you have no excuse not to try.

Old school pizza shop that’s won a few “Best Montreal Pizza” contests over the years. A little on the expensive side but worth the shot if you’re staying so close. Indulge yourself.

I grew up on the West Island, and when I started studying post-secondary downtown, Cote-Vertu metro was an inevitable stop on my way home. While waiting for my bus, this place was waiting for me. Another local grease spoon, and when I say grease, I mean GREASE dripping from your paper bag of French fries. Fresh cut potatoes, and double fried. Prepare yourself for the whiff boiling hot lard and oil as you open the front door. Another perennial best of Montreal award winner.

Hands down the best Middle-eastern grill in ville Saint-Laurent, and that’s saying something with the large middle eastern community residing here. Either chicken or beef or seasoned proper and cooked to perfection. They’re also one of the most incredibly friendly folks you’ll find in the area.

You can have the souvlaki, or the gyro, or a pita or fried calamari. As Greek restaurants go, the city’s Greek-descent community will tell you to go here. But what do I come here for? The grilled chicken, seasoned with oregano, char-grilled and arrives to your table piping hot, cut into bite-size pieces and the perfect level of doneness and juiciness. Order up a side of tzatziki and serve it up with pita and that chicken. You won’t regret it.

Ok it’s a chain. But of all the endless debates that pit one set of Quebecers against another it’s this: St-Hubert or Benny’s for your rotisserie chicken? Your author is firmly set in the Benny camp. The quarter chicken leg is just better. The bbq sauce just tastes better. The poutine, for a chain, is just plain better. Whatever you order, get extra bbq sauce. You’ll thank me later.

The real specialty here is weekend dim sum, when you’ll typically find the place packed with Chinese people. It’s a decent choice if you need your fix, but it isn’t anything to write home about. If you’re looking for authentic Cantonese food, then this is the spot. But this isn’t the place for chicken fried rice, egg rolls and pineapple chicken.
