Sightseeing
Only a couple of miles up the beach, the gorgeous Oak Island lighthouse is still active and available for tours. Hours are very limited though, due to the lighthouse being run by volunteers, and reservations to climb to the top must be made in advance (although not required for tours to the 2nd floor), so be sure to plan ahead if you want to climb the 153 feet to the top (169 feet above the water…talk about beautiful views!). Absolutely worth a visit, even if you don’t climb it!

If you have time, a day trip to Southport is always fun! A beautiful historic town with great dining and local shops, and a ferry that connects to Fort Fisher and the North Carolina Aquarium at the south end of Kure Beach.

Incredible spot for brunch and worth the 10 minute drive to Southport! Try the American Woman omelette, the loaded fried green tomatoes or the stuffed French toast. A kids menu isn’t published, but they are kid friendly (fruit bowls for kids while they wait on their food) and do have a kid-friendly selection if you ask (grilled cheese, chicken tenders, etc).

Drink menu is also fairly extensive. Worth the 10 to 12 minute drive from the cottage if you’re in the mood for some sushi!

Open to the public, it is a very pleasant course! If you came in over the old bridge, you saw it on your left just after getting on the island. With a bar and grill on site also, it’s a great spot to spend a morning or afternoon!
