Shopping

James Street is another has-it-all avenue for food and entertainment options. Much like King Street, it’s well set up for an afternoon of shopping, or to head out for lunch or dinner. There are tons of new gym facilities, as well as specialty shops like furniture stores and baby supplies. If you’re looking for a hairdresser or nail salon, James Street is a good place to look. The James Street Market is also a wonderful place to stroll through, where you can get fresh fruits and vegetables or a hot lunch from a food stall.

To get a better sense of Brisbane’s history, and to experience a side of Bowen Hills that’s a bit different from other neighborhoods in the area, spend a morning or afternoon walking through the New Farm suburbs. This beautiful peninsula is now known by some as Brisbane’s “Little Italy” due to the number of Italian immigrants who were some of the first settlers into the suburbs. Before them, though, the region was known as Binkinba, or place of the land tortoises, to the Turrbal tribe that once inhabited the area. Now, pretty suburban houses line the streets, stretching on alongside camphor laurel trees. The neighborhood even has a community arts center called The Powerhouse, which was once

The City Botanic Gardens are spread picturesquely along the banks of the river. The well maintained gardens are the first in Brisbane, and feature a wide variety of unique botanical attractions like a bamboo grove and a boulevard of weeping figs. Sculptures add an artistic element to the park’s stunning nature, and events can be attended or booked at venues like the Riverstage. The all-abilities playground is accessible to children and adults in wheelchairs and other assisted mobility devices.
