The U8 takes you up north and south in the city. It can take you to a hip area like Mitte, Alexanderplatz, Rosentallerplatz, Weinmeisterstrasse etc. It's the best train line in the city because it goes directly north and covers great hoods.
The U7 is also very useful.
There are many buses from Hermanplatz that will take you quickly around the city.
