Something is always happening at Hard Rock Situated in the shadow of one of the world’s greatest icons, Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg is where Rock ‘n Roll meets Mzanzi chic as the eclectic dining experience is taken to a new level in one of the hottest dining spots in South Africa. Situated under the watchful eye of the six metre tall, 2.5 ton bronze statue of Nelson Mandela in the iconic Nelson Mandela square, the Hard Rock Cafe brings out the best in Jozi, utilising the relaxing vibe to offer some of the best dining on the square, with seating for 90 on the terrace. A haven for some of South Africa’s best glamour, fashion and lifestyle outlets, Nelson Mandela Square was the perfect setting for this Hard Rock Cafe, taking its place in the European styled piazza to present itself as a showcase venue for exceptional dining and some of the finest music in the city. The laid-back atmosphere of the square lends itself to rocking weekends, where musicians entertain the aged leather American diner-style banquette seating to ease patrons into the soul of all that Hard Rock encompasses. Inside you’re greeted by a constellation of nearly 7000 drumstricks, beating their way into your heart, all built around the showcase drum set, while the back bar is wrapped in some of the most modern LED Screens. And surrounded by the signature Hard Rock memorabilia, the marble bar takes prominence at the Cafe, allowing patrons to sit back with their favourite drink and keep an eye both on the stage and on the movements in the Square outside. Hard Rock Johannesburg is not just another sidewalk Cafe. It is a lifestyle of freedom, built on the good things in life – good food, good music and good times. With its’ polished black underground subway station tiled walls screaming out layers of cool to the imported designer light features which will catch the eye, everything whispers a good time. And wait until you get to the bathrooms, as the black and gold with flaming red doors transport you into the set of an American 70s movie, ensuring the memory will stick with you for a long time to come. With Hard Rock’s signature memorabilia – such as Elvis Presley’s Harley Davidson leather motorcycle pants or a guitar from the personal collection of Bo Diddley, the Cafe showcases the best of rock in its own untamed style. You may be sitting next to Jimmy Hendrix’ leather jacket, or that military coat worn by Mick Jagger. Or if you’re looking local be sure to check out Arno Carstens’ outfit or Danny K’s tennis shoes. As with all the Hard Rock Cafes, the legendary merchandise store operates within the restaurant, where you can load up on t-shirts to martini glasses. With a menu that is as decadent as it is delicious, enjoy a food experience that compliments the atmosphere, all while sampling Jozi’s unique African atmosphere. Whether you come for the food, the music, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere that makes Hard Rock Cafe so great, you haven’t experienced Jozi magic until you’ve experienced the Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg.

The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is set in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, west of Johannesburg. This private game park opened in 1985 with two white rhinos, but today boasts more than 600 animals. There are more than 30 species in the reserve including buffalo, lion, white rhino, wild dog and leopard and more than 20 antelope species. The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve has a breeding centre where visitors can learn about the reserve’s efforts to preserve endangered species. Among its most successful breeding programs is that of the wild dog, which saw the reserve expand the programme to include Bengal and Siberian tigers and the white lion. Visitors can watch the predators (lion, cheetah and wild dog) being fed at 13:00 on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at the predator camp. Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve also has a sanctuary for the rare Cape vulture, and there an additional 200 bird species in the reserve. You can visit the snake and reptile park, go on game drives, night drives and horse trails. The reserve also offers visitors experiences other than game viewing: overnight visitors can book into the reserve’s luxurious log cabins, or into self-catering chalets. Children can amuse themselves at the jungle gym and playground, and there is a swimming pool for those wanting to cool down after a hot summer day’s game viewing.

Hop on the red minibus taxi for a unique trip to Soweto. No visit to the city of Johannesburg is complete without a trip into its largest and most vibrant township, Soweto. It's home to more than 1.2-million South Africans and some of the most significant historical events in South Africa took place here. There are several stops (some very short) along the route and when the trip is complete it becomes clear how each stop ties into the theme of freedom, and how through the sacrifices of many of Soweto’s inhabitants, the struggle against apartheid was won. Best way to explore Johannesburg city and Soweto FNB Stadium (known as Soccer City during the 2010 FIFA World Cup), the biggest stadium in Africa, built in the form of a calabash or Zulu clay pot, traditionally used for serving umqombothi (beer) Diepkloof, a diverse neighbourhood Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, built during the Second World War, the largest hospital in the world Bara Taxi Rank, the largest in Johannesburg Orlando Towers, a colourful landmark popular for bungee and base jumping, and abseiling Orlando Stadium, the first ever sports facility built for black South Africans in a residential area Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world in which two Nobel Prize winners have lived Kliptown Open Air Museum in Walter Sisulu Square At the Hector Pieterson Memorial, you'll hop off and hear about the events of 16 June 1976 – the day when the young Hector was killed when police opened fire on students who were protesting against, among other things, the introduction of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in township schools. Then walk in the footsteps of the South African legend Nelson Mandela, as you hop off in Vilakazi Street. Enter the Mandela House, now a museum, where he and his family used to live. Just down the road lies the house where Desmond Tutu lived. In this same street you will encounter the eclectic atmosphere that emanates from the markets and memorabilia stands, as well as the various eateries like the Mandela Family Restaurant, NexDor and Sakhumzi. The final stop is the Kliptown Open Air Museum in Walter Sisulu Square where in 1955, 3 000 people came together to adopt the Freedom Charter. See for yourself, engraved in stone, the 10 tenets upon which the South African Constitution is based. Where does the Johannesburg Red City Tour and Soweto Combo start? The Soweto tour, which is an extension of the Joburg Red City Tour, departs from stop 4 at Gold Reef City Casino every hour from 10.05am to 2.05pm. On arrival at Gold Reef City Casino, you'll be met by your Soweto tour guide and driver. The trip through Soweto (from departure to returning to Gold Reef City Casino) takes approximately two hours. Unless you hop on the last taxi of the day (2.05pm), you'll have the option of spending a bit more time at the Hector Pieterson Museum or in Vilakazi Street. Buy tickets online

The Fossil Hominid Sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and Environs, known as the Cradle of Humankind, were declared a World Heritage Site on December 2 1999. The Cradle of Humankind covers an area of over 47 000 hectares of privately owned land north west of Johannesburg and is home to over 17 000 residents. In 2005, two other highly significant sites, Makapan and Taung were listed as serial sites together with the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (COH WHS). Together, these are the Fossil Hominid sites of South Africa. The area is of outstanding universal value, because it contains a complex of palaeo-anthropological sites, which have yielded some of the most valuable evidence, world-wide, of the origins of modern humans, hence its name “ Cradle of Humankind”. The declared area is 47 000 hectares and extends approximately between Oaktree, Hekpoort, Broederstroom and Lanseria in Gauteng. Most of the site is on dolomite, a rock type which is slightly soluble in water. This has two major consequences- the formation of caves and the formation of fossils. There are currently over 200 caves on the site, with possibly more to be discovered. There are 13 fossil sites which have been extensively examined and some have produced fossils of human ancestors and their relatives. A variety of stone tools used by human ancestors such as axes and scrapers have also been identified. The range of other creatures which co-existed in the area included extinct animals such as short-necked giraffe, giant buffalo, giant hyaena and several species of saber-toothed cats. Numerous fossils of extant creatures such as leopards and hartebeest have also been found.

Arts & Culture

Everard Read is Africa’s oldest commercial art gallery. Established along a dusty street in the young mining town of Johannesburg the gallery celebrates its centenary year in 2013. Evolving within the continents economic powerhouse, Everard Read has since its inception been associated with pre-eminent artists working in Southern Africa. Throughout the 20th Century, a large proportion of South Africa’s most important paintings and sculpture graced the interior of the gallery in central Johannesburg. Everard Read has also been involved in sourcing Fine Art from acclaimed international artists and continues to do so. This, over decades, profoundly stimulated the tastes and sophistication of art collectors in a country somewhat isolated during apartheid. In the dynamic contemporary era in South Africa, Everard Read is at its core a gallery dedicated to exhibiting paintings and sculpture by South Africa’s finest modern and contemporary artists. The development of young artists’ careers is also a crucial component of the gallery’s mission. After our 50 years in the city centre, in the late 1970’s, a new gallery was built to house Everard Read on Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank. This building has since become a celebrated icon of South African post-modern design. In 2009, the CIRCA building was developed alongside the gallery. CIRCA, which is supported by Deutsche Bank has been internationally recognised as an outstanding contribution to South African architecture. Within the subtle curved walls of CIRCA, a series of profound and powerful exhibitions have already been held. The curatorial directors seek to intersperse contemporary art exhibitions with human technology and scientific installations. The magnificent Darwin Room at the apex of CIRCA is used for workshops and lectures.
